You won't ever get the 1-2 to hit before the limiter if you go 3.73s, hell, it took me FOREVER to get this dialed in even with my current gears. 1st doesn't last long at all and slapping that limiter even when commanding early is frustrating and potentially damaging.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YyIjFKE0LlU that video there will show the annoying soft limiter hit that I battled for a while. Luckily I eventually got that all dialed in but of course while your 6r80 is out I suggest you buy the clutches and shaft if you have not done so yet.

With what gears? Mine is going to get clutches and shaft, the kids will stay stock for now. What gear is in your car now and before.

My comment when it goes to the next page makes it look like I am knocking the 6r haha. I was referring to you having issues if you went 3.73s with the transmission, I would go with 3.15s if I were you (or 3.08s or whatever you get your hands on).

Ok here you go. The coyote plate has the recessed center section that I'm pointing to. What I did is lay both plates on the concrete flat. I placed a ruler across them to give a straight edge. I then tried to place the exact same but under each. It wouldn't go under the 5.4 plate, however the 5.0 coyote plate allowed the nut, two washers, and there's enough to almost put a third. I'll see if I can get en exact thickness.

Mike,
Do you have a wider picture of this? I am just not understanding the measurement and what you are trying to say. You guys have me concerned about the flexplate that I selected.
Thanks.

No,I knew what you meant. I ordered 3.15s for mine and 3.31s for the kid.

The picture was taken with both a stock 5.0 and stock 5.4 flexplate with the crank mounting surface laying flat on the ground. I then laid a yard stick across both. I used a couple of nuts to give a quick visual of the depth difference. The difference is close to 3/16 of an inch. I can't say for sure if you will have problems but converter clearance is usually very critical. A normal modular flexplate will push the converter further into the transmission vs the 5.0 (coyote).

Well I have two units now with 46k to 48k on them, two Circle D converters ordered, two Quick 6 controllers on the way, a stock ds for the kids car, a Dyna Spicer ds for mine along with a PA pan, billet intermediate shaft and Exedy clutches. Just need two cross members now!

Im going to mock up the kids trans this weekend to see if the 4.6/5r plate will work and the starter while we wait for the Circle D converters. That will also allow me to install the 14 ds in the kids car to check the fit.

What gears were in your car in that video?

Do you have a select shift button shifter, and if so, does it work?

Since everything is working correctly now I finally checked this while driving. It worked flawlessly and the converter locks up in each gear depending on how you set it. This was only under normal conditions, but the shifts were quicker than my F150 with this feature. I'm slowly getting more aggressive allowing the controller to learn before I try to beat on it.
Thanks Mike

What are your plans for the shifter for the kids car?

Thank you!

I played with this some more today and it's a lot faster than the factory selectshift. You hit it,it shifts. Karl said it should be as responsive at WOT. We'll see as I progressive with throttle input. If it's that responsive at WOT I'll be adding a set of paddle shifters. The 1-2 might be tricky though.

Mike,

I really like the way this is progressing. Thanks for the updates. If you get a minute to figure it up, what would the cost be roughly for me to drop my 3650, go with a 6R80, aftermarket converter, drive shaft, crossmember, shifter, Quick Shift controller, etc? I don't necessarily need a brand new transmission. If I go with a used transmission what model vehicle/year etc works? Is there a certain I.D. case stamp number to look for?

Thanks!

This is a hard question. I bought my trans used. It was a great deal so I ended up at $5200 for everything. That includes inspection and reassembly with two parts being replaced. The cheapest thing is to buy a 11-14 mustang GT setup complete. Since I had time I jumped on the deals as I saw them. I also have about $600 in the rearend to swap gears.

I forgot but I had my list of parts saved on my phone. This is what I bought:

Trans - Used 6R/ Exedy clutches/PA deep pan
Stock cooler and lines (1/2 lines**)
TCS Shaft
Converter(2B 32-3400)- Circle D
Cooler - 2011
Shifter - 2011
Shifter cable - 2011
Dipstick - PA68401
Driveshaft -
Crossmember - 2011
Controller - Quick 6
Harness (included w/controller)
Flexplate. - PA26469
Inspctn/Assmbly
DR3Z-7213-BA handle -2013/14
AR3Z-7E391-AA bezel -2011
TOTAL COST - $5156

3.08 M420988308
Kit - M4210B2
Fluid/Gasket
Labor
TOTAL - $590

Tach adapter -Autometer 9117
Fluid - Mercon LV (15 qts for mine)
TOTAL - $ 215

46k 2014 6r. $1175
TCS Controller. $1200
Circle D Converter. $1200
2014 DS $165
PA flexplate SFI. $145

That was the list for my kids parts. Then I added these to mine.

Same as above plus
PA deep pan with dipstick $300
Exedy clutches and intermediate shaft $1100 + install
Dana Spicer 3.5" aluminum '14 DS $650

Then there is the gear swaps for both cars that will run about $550 each. 3.31 for his and 3.15 for mine.

His converter is a 2c approximately 3400 stall and mine is a 4c approximately 4400 stall.

Still need to figure out what shifter I am going with for mine.

Go to your local LKQ auto parts and see whats available they had a pretty good selection. There site sucks though.trans comes with a 6 mo 6k miles warranty or you can purchase a 12/12.

Timmbo,
This a good idea of the cost. There are also plenty of nickle and dime components as well. Consider the cost of fluid (yes, Mercon LV is that expensive - $70 a case on Amazon), transmission filter, engine to transmission and other bolts (3650 bolts are too short - $30), starter index plate, cooler and lines, and tach adaptor (Quick 6 needs a tach signal).
A few things:
I purchased my 6r (Mustang Case) from LKQ off of eBay. It came from Texas and was cheaper than if I went to my local LKQ an picked it up myself here in NY.
I am going to try a 05-09 stock shifter. Therefore, I needed an '11-14 shifter cable. It was $128. I am hoping the O/D off button will work for the yet to be released tansbrake.

Ahhh yes, the little things. I was going to learn all of this today. I dont have the converters yet so we are going to install with the stock converter today to mock it all up and see what is needed and if the 3v starter index plate and flexplate works. Also need a cooler for the kids car.
