Well, I've heard what I'd consider to be excessive valvetrain noise on the 5.0 since the 2nd day of ownership. 10/12 to be exact.

I've had several people listen to get outside opinions, but nobody else seems to agree with me.

Last week, against everything in my blood, I took my car to the dealer to have them take a look.

They told me that they didn't hear it at first, but after comparing it to 2 other 5.0's on the lot that it was a noticeable difference in the valve train noise. They said that the car was half a quart low and that they topped it off and the noise stopped. That I could pick up the car and everything was good.

I came and got the car, and it was making the same noise on my way home. I knew the oil wasn't low, because I had just changed the oil the weekend before with 8 quarts of Mobil 5w20.

I called the next day, and let them know the noise was still there, and that I would have to bring it back in later.

I finally brought it back today, and they had some "specialist" come out and verify what the "master mechanic" had concluded. They collectively determined that they would have to tear down the motor!

I am going tomorrow morning to meet with the "master mechanic", and decide if I want to give the authorization.

Here's where I'm unsure of what to do... Should I have them tear down my 2 month old motor with 2829 miles, or just see what happens over the next 3-4000 miles?

Supposedly this "master mechanic" has been working with Ford for 26 years, and just got back from a 2 week training course on the new 5.0.

They will also be flying some engineer to work with this "master mechanic" to determine what could be the problem.

I think I'll go ahead and let them tear into it. I've read of a few others having some valvetrain noise, but I really don't think this is right.

I've tried to capture it on video, but can't seem to... It almost sounds like an exhaust leak.

Any of you 5.0 guys had any issues with valvetrain noise? I know there's been talk about increased noise after changing the oil, but nothing from the factory...

I never understood why Ford uses 5W20 oil in the new 5.0 engine. I use 5W30 in my 4.6 and 10W40 when I'm road racing - works great. I would try Valvoline SynPower Motor Oil 5W-40 and see if it gets ride of the valvetrain noise before having Ford tear the motor down.

Yep, that's pretty much it.

Sounds exactly like this:

could it be fuel injectors not sitting properly? they are very loud and rythmic when not fully seated.

After reading this makes me wonder. I have had twice the check engine light come on for " random misfire" Dealer said it was cause I just filled up and got some bad gas. Both times gas was from different places.

Heading to the dealer now, not sure exactly what I'm going to do, but I'll have to decide in about 15 minutes.

Sorry to hear that. Thats a tough call. The only thing I have to say is that if Ford is sending two specialists, at least you can count on hopefully one of them knowing what to do.

I had an 06VW GLI with a similar situation. Very low miles, car had tons of issues which seemed to be premature failure of the high pressure fuel pump(based on my data logging and some other knowledgeable input). Two dealerships couldn't figure it out and thought it was just bad gas. I insisted it wasn't finally got VW to send a Master Tech who was a specialist in the 2.0T engine. Within a day, he determined the fuel pump(cam driven to ramp up to 120barr of pressure) failed and ultimately leaded to the lost of compression and wiped out the head. VW listened to him, and I ended up getting a brand new head(with all new valves and components) out of the deal. It was worth it in the end, but believe me I understand how worried you might be about having them tear down the 5.0

Two specialits should tell you they are taking it seriously. I would let them work on it and figure it out cause it sounds pretty bad. If they mess up they will have to replace your motor anyway right?

I'm letting them do it.

Too many people are having this issue, and no one seems to get a real answer.

I guess I'm the guinea pig, and we'll see what comes of it.

I'll keep this thread updated.
