So i am trying to upgrade my differential gear. i got my car up on the lift and raised it. What i found confuses me to no end. I was informed that V6s use 7.5 but my gear housing is 8.8. i have asked just about everyone i know of who works on or owns a mustang. No one can give me a solid answer.

The guy working on another mustang in the stall next to me mentioned that all V6 mustangs from 05-now have been upgraded to the 8.8.

Is there someway to verify this?

the 11+ v6's have 8.8's IIRC stock.

if pre '11 and it was bought used then it could have been upgraded by previous owner

If you pop the cover off you'll know in a second.

The 7.5 will be an open diff, and the 8.8 would be a LSD with clutches.

2005-2010 used 7.5 rear end as the stock rear end size.

There is a minor difference or two in the pumpkin itself between a 7.5 and 8.8.
Here is a pic of a 8.8 and 7.5 side by side, with the 8.8 on the left. (ignore the covers, as they are both aftermarket covers).

The 7.5 has a hole in each of the flat tabs near the pinion (where the driveshaft connects to), whereas the 8.8 is solid.

On the gusset-brace on the top of the tube on each side of the pumpkin, it looks like the 8.8 one is bigger and thicker than the one of the 7.5.

The sticker part number and other info on there would be your best reference. Although "V272e0053130367jo" is not a common part number format.

Lastly, measure the width of the cover across the center of the axles. We'll be able to figure it that way, too!
