Hmm How do you feel about an IRS for the Mustang in 09?
it may be a reality because of the Challenger and Camaro both having IRS
Ford may be forced to do the same.

Quote:
2009 Mustang Chassis:

The “DEW-lite” chassis the 2005+ Mustang rides on was a significant investment for Ford even though it was derived from the existing floor pan that carried the Lincoln LS, Thunderbird, and Jaguar S-Type. Significant changes had to be made to lighten up both the weight and cost to fit within the Mustang’s needs. We see an evolution of the current chassis to continue under the new Mustang but with a few key changes. An independent rear suspension (IRS) was initially planned for the 2005 Mustang but notably missing when it arrived on the showroom floors. Why? It costs too much. While Ford has said that customers “don’t want it”, and that “it is not necessary, blah, blah”, they are well aware that the competition from GM and Chrysler are going to have it. They are aware that customers want it and that it’s a necessity to win over import buyers that would otherwise shop for a Nissan 350Z or other comparable sports cars. Thus, the next Mustang will have IRS if it is to be taken seriously among its peers both stateside and from abroad.

More on IRS for 09

While the IRS technology exchanges with Ford Australia may bring a superior IRS into the 2009 Mustang redesign. Many mustang followers would like to see reduced weight and body roll factored into the 2009 Mustang redesign efforts as well.

Should be an option for the specality ones. Use it for road course built stangs only i think.

Interesting. I like IRS for street driving and road courses. I don't think it is the best thing for a drag race car though.

how much more does an irs actually weigh?

Not to much more. Alot is available to make it better now so the weight wont be much of the issue. Its just not a drag setup. Don't need more stangs snappen half shafts at the track.

No thank you. To Hell with an IRS.
Well obviously its of little use for the drag strip, but now that we have one that turns a little, turning a lot sounds like fun...

I'd put one in the Vert...

Mustang is a Drag Car. IRS creates a weak point for sure.
It was customer response that put the current setup back in the Stang.

It's funny, the lack of IRS and the quality of the dash materials are the two things that I have found other forums "mock" about the S197...

All I say to those types is:
"If ya wanted a Rally Car; go buy a EVO"
Then I laugh and walk away muttering and laughing "An EVO hahaha"

This car kicks ass on the windies w/ the sra. I had no problem keeping up with the import guys. It handled like a champ. There is no need for IRS. If they decide to, I guess I will deal with it when I look for a second car.

Its all about "options". So, long as you can still go live axle for a straight line car - its all good...

If you can do 1 lateral G in a Roushed up GT, imagine what you can do with an IRS?

There are IRSes which can take 1000RWHP or more, but, I would assume wheel-hop will always be an issue...
