The 5.0's main difference is the direct injection, but I think (I could be wrong) they also have stuffed the 2013/2014 track pack items (engine wise) as standard this time.

The revised 5.0 doesn't have DI.

I think Ford is just keeping it in the back pocket for later. I've noticed over the years that Ford does things different than some other manufacturers. No other domestic has embraced V8 over head cams. Hyundai did GDI with the coupe and got roughly 13% more power.
