I have that size tire on the rear of my car, but on an 18x10 rim. The rim seems more than enough for the tire width, so I would guess a 9" rim would be fine too. Apologies for the picture size...

Thanks, I am looking for 18X9 though..
I have 4 18X9 Bullitt wheels and just got those tires at the following sizes
285/40 18 (Rear) and 255/45 18 (Front) and was wondering if they would fit on a 9 inch rim as opposed to the GT500 9.5 inch rim.

9" wheels is plenty!...When i had a set of 17x9 cobra 10th anniversary wheels for my Dragradials i put 315/35/17's on them and she fit just fine....So 285's wont be a problem at all!

I have those tire sizes on the front and back. Front rims are 18x9, back are 18x10. As I said, I think the rears would work since the 10" rear rims seem almost too much for the tire.

I use to run those on the back of my 18X9's, but the backspacing was not enough for them to tuck under the back fenders. I run the Ford Racing FR500's that only come in 18X9 w/24mm offset. I switched to 255's all the way around and run different rear tires at the track. If that is the offset of your 18X9's and you want pics of how it looked I can email or post them. They basically just stuck out by like 1/4" or so, but it was way too much for me.

Is your car Stock height? or is yours lowered

I was advised not to run the 285/40 tires on my 9 inch wheel. So I bought 2 more 255/45 and now run them on all 4 corners. I had the 285/40's on 10 inch wheels before I sold them.

285/40/18 and 18x9 wheels are what GT500's come with on the rear. The combo fits perfect. Perfect fit on my GT too.

do the 255/45 18's for best overall handling, the rear will push if you run the larger size

It will feel incredibly wobbley and loose due to so much sidewall flex.

When when I ran 255s on an 8" I couldn't stand how mushy it was

I don't understand then what a 1/2 inch difference in rim size makes,
If the GT500 uses these same tires on a 9.5 inch rim and it does not feel mushy..

Yea I just wonder what it's going to look like on the rim before I spend the cash to mount and balance them.

Thats why I asked for Pictures. but it does not look like alot of people did this combo

Scott - this is my 265/40 on a 8.5", so the 1/2 approved difference is the same. not exact, but an idea.
