    UPDATE: Thank you for your replies and help. It turns out that the problem was the fuel rail pressure sensor gradually failing. It finally crapped out and gave a code. Mechanic compared pressure readings to confirm and replaced it. Back to cruising! It has bee steady for a couple of weeks...
