The spacer for my 2005 was the same way, except the gap was oriented towards the top. I dont know the exact reason for it being like that but it let me slip it on after almost forgetting it, lol.

It's possible your fuel pump wasn't working correctly before and your sensor was correctly alerting you to low fuel pressure. Unfortunately the GT's fuel rails dont have a valve to hook an analog pressure gauge too I don't think the V6 does either. I went through 3 faulty fuel pumps this year...
