Sounded like mine before it got replaced. http://www.s197forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=121504
Miles, motor history, maintenance? Sounds like a broken chain guide or tensioner that is not pumping up allowing the chain to have some slap in it. It could also be a follower or lash adjuster. Either way it is def valve train. Doesn't sound like a rod knock or piston slap. I would pull the cam covers and inspect the cam for odd wear and the followers too. Also I assume it is throwing no codes hence why you don't think it is a phaser issue correct?

There was a guy a while back that had a similar sound... Ended up being a spark plug that had backed out just enough to leak... I'd start there, and then headers and collectors.... with the easy stuff, before diving into the valve train or front cover area.

35k on the motor

it's driven agressively for sure not much racing on it though.

i do very regular oil changes at 3k miles or every 3 months which ever comes
first usually mileage. and i use the recommended weight full synthetic castrol edge

i hope to god it's just a lash adj or lifter, i literally just spent thousands fixing the fan harness meltdown issue.

i might pull the covers wednesday and see what i got going on

yeah it's not throwing any codes, and it doesn't sound like its coming from the timing cover it's coming somewhere further back.

my plan of attack is this, i'm going to tighten the exhaust up, and move from there.

thanks for the sparkplug idea i will try that first, but i plan on going through the exhaust then cracking the valve covers.

With the way these heads are designed I am surprised it worked loose. Usually they carbon up and are difficult to remove. Glad it was a simple fix.
