Hey guys, I am a new 5.0 owner who just loves his car. I have been looking at several forums and following all the BS with the #8 cylinder and all the MT-82 problems.

Now, not once have I seen it mentioned with the MT-82 that it's underrated for the car.

Here is Getrag's website for the transmission:
http://www.getrag.de/en/235

Notice the torque rating of the transmission is 500Nm. Converted to ft/lbs that is 369! Could this be? Did Ford really stick a transmission in our cars that isn't even rated for the power it puts out stock? Did Ford modify the transmission to accept more power? If this is true it certainly explains the transmission problems.

So Ford has confirmed that's the transmission in the car? I have a hard time believing Ford would publicly admit to putting an underrated transmission in the car.

I know it's a MT-82, as stated in my first post. What I am asking is if it's a MT-82 that's rated higher then what is listed on Getrags website. The MT-82 has a torque range of like 360-500nm depending on how it's built. Is the one in the Mustang rated higher and not listed?

you sure that's the same trans? the model #s dont match

considering they seems to have the model #s have the torque rating as part of the number I'm skeptical it's the same

That's Getrag's internal name for the transmission. It is a MT-82, but like I said, I don't know if it's identical to the one in the Mustang. That's what I am trying to find out.

I found this on another forum, but I am not an engineer and can't confirm weather this is true or not:
Ford's version of the 6MTI500 (MT82) is specific to the Coyote , although, the 6MTI500 is also used by Range Rover but has a 5.44 first gear ratio. The 6MTI500 was a 4 way collaboration to reduce cost which is why a brand new MT82 only cost $2500. The 6MTI500 was rated at 500nm or 369ft lbs of torque at a gross vehicle weight of 4250kg or 9350LBS!!!! (Gotta love those Germans). At that vehicle weight, the torque rating could be twice that in a vehicle that weighs 3800lbs or well over 750ft lbs... It is assembled in China (to reduce cost again).

Well that makes sense. The heavier the vehicle, the less torque the trans is going to stand up to.

Ford post the spec. on the trans way before the car was offered for sale in 2009. The torqe was listed at 370 IIRC. We knew right away ther would be problems. The tr6060 trans is rated at 700, and Ford should have used that trans. BTW there is only 1 MT-82, ( thank god). Save up your money and put a TR6060 in your car. I did!!

If the torque rating for the MT82 is figured for a 9500lb vehicle, then clearly for a 3500lb car it will be right there with the 6060.

The MT82 might be a whining bitch, and a bear to shift, but they're not breaking. Anyone own an 01-03 GT? The 3650 through those years were garbage. The sychronizers would break and they just wouldn't shift. Through a TSB Ford fixed them. Parts and labor was around $2k. It was a synchronizer and gear kit. I wouldn't be surprised to see something similar done here with the MT82.

Eh, mine broke, Locked up in 5th after 3k miles. Could have been a bad synchro due to the shitty clutch assembly. No worries about that though, RXT FTW

Did it break from racing it? I'm not saying they're invincible, just that they're not generally breaking from HP.

i remember that. my 01 GT had a T45 and my buddy had a 3650 and he went through 6 in the first year...granted he beat the living shit out of it.

and it seems that if you put a good clutch in the MT-82 they seem to be much happier.

Easier said then done with the MT-82. You sensor system are completely different. It will fit, but no one has figured out how to make the speedo sensor work. The pigtail and pick-up sensor are completely different. Pretty unhappy with my MT-82.

Went through 3 of them in my 01 Cobra, and 2 in my 04 Mach 1. 3650 was terrible.

It will work , there is a post here on the switch, and D&D knows how to do it.

Is the MT-82 weak or is it the clutch? How are the Boss' holding up?

And yes the 3650 sucks. My 08 has shifted like shit since the day I took delivery. Doesn't miss gears but is pretty notchy cold or warm.
