I'm not an avid drag racer like a lot of you are but i do want a decent tire for my s197. Has anyone heard anything bad about General Tires or Yokohama? I found a place that has them priced a little better than Nittos. Anyone heard anything bad about these tires, or should i just spring for the nittos since i know they are a great tire.

These are goin on a 20" rim btw. Anyone have any other suggestions? Wanting to keep my OTD price at around 800.00 if at all possible. These damn Nankangs are about to drive me batshit crazy.

i run yoko's on the mitsu seems like a good tire did find it picked up a little more road noise than with the goodyears though , but this is a stock mitsu and has like what 40hp to the front tire ? so they could be great or garbage on a s197 i dunno

I have used Yokohama in the past on my Corvette and currently on my BMW. For the money I think they make an excellent tire. The vette tires were the old a008's very sticky and handled well, no road noise for such a wide tire. I have Avids on my BMW and can only say good things about them also. The General Exclaims also look to be very good. (think that's their high performance line)

Yea its the Exclaim i think. Doesnt look too bad but i have never seen anyone using it. I'm going to wait til after mustang week to make my final decision to see if i can see any s197's with some of these tires to see how they look. Sadly im only going to be able to afford a 285 out back. I can get a 315 drag radial out back but that wouldnt be very economical for me even though the price is right.

Do you want sticky tires? These are the best out there

Falken RT-615
Dunlop Direzza Z1 star spec
Toyo Proxes R1R

I have the General Exclaims and I can't complain about lack of traction. The road noise is also bearable. They are the first set I have had on the new 18x10 wheels that I purchased so I can't really give a comparison vs other tires. I also have about 5k miles on the tire and I have not really noticed any wear on the tires yet and I beat them up regularly. I do not do burnouts or anything like that.

So.... you would say they hook pretty well in a straight line?

No matter what i get they will be compared with nankangs so anything is probably better than what i have. LOL

Bringing it back from the dead...

I too am looking for a good street tire. I'm in the process of switching to 18's and am thinking Nitto 555's, but was wondering if there is something 'better' for around the same price. I'm looking for a bit more comfort on my daily drive. The current plan is to get 255/45 up front and 295/45 out back. This way I can fill the wheel wells the way that I like and get a good amount of sidewall so the ride isn't so rough.

Anyone think the Nittos are a bad idea? If so, do you have a better suggestion in the same ballpark price-wise?

The 555s worked great for me during two summers while N/A. Traction on the street was great and handled excellent on the curves. I ran 255/285. If you're planning a power upgrade in the near future, go with 555Rs as the 555s lost all traction once I put the blower on.

Like I mentioned in the other thread, a big staggar will leave the car will considerable understeer. A bigger read bar may be needed to get back to neutral.

What is a read bar?

I don't think it will be horrible with the understeer; I don't play rough on the street. This is mostly for the looks department anyway; the new rims will never see the track.

I put a set of Michelin A/S Pilot Plus on mine recently.
They grip like a bastard in Rain and Dry.
Dont know about snow yet.
They are rated #1 over at Tire Rack whatever that means...
And they are Z Rated too.

That means very little. I really don't trust the reviews that much at tirerack or many other tire sites. There are a lot fo people that have no idea what they are talkign about doing user reviews. Some say that their 400 treadwear all season tires are the best handling and performing tire ever created and there is no need for race tires. For example, there are reviews of summer only high performance tires giving the tires really poor ratings because they give no traction in the snow. Others complain about treadlife on performance tires if they last less than 50,000 miles. Someone even had the nerve to complain that their drag radials lasted less than 10,000 miles with very frequent trips to the track.

Its probably better to look at the actual tirerack comparison test results than the user ratings.

For street tires, I am totally impressed with the Toyo T1R tires I just put on my 2008. I have had a LOT of performance tires on various cars, but these have really got my attention. Great tire.

firestone wideoval they are so awesome.. i cut 1.8 60ft with no burnout and they lasted about 2yrs and im at the track every weekend and put about 50,000 miles on them. i bet you wont find a street tire that will hook better than it. they have a 275/35/20 that would be great for you. they also handle awesome. i got buddies that have run 11s on these tires...
