Will a Shaker head unit work in a NON-Shaker system?

I have a total base non-Shaker head unit in my car with one CD. Will a 6-disc Shaker unit work with a basic swap?

I don't know BUT I think there is a tie in with the factory computer. I think the dealer needs to do something in the PCM? A few years ago I saw a thread talking about this but it didn't matter at the time so I breazed through it.
Maybe give a dealer a call BUT most times they don't know their ass from a ...(well you get it...)
