Just wondering if anyone knew first hand what the boost limit and or horsepower limit of the pistons in the factory short block are?

I imagine the load on the engine and way it is driven would probable effect the outcome a little. So let say its a street car. Not driven daily. But gets run hard occasionally. Only see's a dragstrip once a year. Thanks!!

Not sure about the pistons but people seem to say that more often than not the rods are the weakest link in the stock assembly.

Not really tech. The search is your friend but the general consensus is that the stock shortblock is good for around 500rwhp. I've seen people with more and I've seen quite a few pop an engine with less.

for some reason, I've seen 05&06 short blocks last for a lonnnggg time with 500+ to the wheels, but the 07-up's never lasted with above 500. I'm not sure if anything changed, maybe how the pistons were casted but to mee the earlier model short blocks were a little bit stronger. I would still put the mark on the limit right at 490-500whp. Use the the search button though, there is 2168465165 threads on this topic

dont make yours a what if motor and do it right if you want more boost. Mine with the old owner popped his with an s trim at 9lbs of boost.

Some can take it a lot more then others. But like i said, if you want more boost. build it for it

Must be coincidence. There is no difference between pistons and rods from 05-'10. All the same part numbers, all the same parts.

What about the difference in the manufactures of the parts throughout the years to which the same parts numbers are assigned? Two or more manufacturers can and do make the same parts, but each will most likely have some difference in the forging, casting, etc.

It probably happens in other components, but not the engine program. Even if it did, the manufacturers would adhere to strict specifications. Even if they were from different manufacturers, the specs (castings/material/tolerances/machining) would all be the same.

It could be a slight tuning change that's causing certain ones to blow up before the others. Who knows, but it's not the components.
