Do gears effect dyno #'s?

I'm almost embarassed to ask, but would changing rear gears give different results on the dyno without making any other modifications?

It will make the numbers read differently. For example, I believe if you have 4.10's on the dyno compared to the 3.73's the 3.73's might make the dyno read higher WHP numbers but on the track the 4.10's would yield better results.

Any guess as to the disparity in whp of 3.55 to 4.10's?

Yes, but i believe the dyno accounts for it.

nobody cares about dyno numbers anyways. ET tells all.

Guys I appreciate the replies, and I know "the track" is the real litmus test.

I am asking from the perspective of general curiosity relative to the effect gears have. Perhaps it's a question/conversation better suited for my tuner.

I do not agree with this statement; the gears do affect your dyno numbers and ET does tell all. There is no way for the dyno to account for gears.

so a motor with 3.90's will put down less RWHP than if it had 4.10's?

Our local tuner assures me that lower gears (higher numbers) do register slightly lower rwhp #'s. So, 4.10's will show lower rwhp on the dyno than 3.90's, 3.73's, 3.55's, etc. But, as we all know, the 4.10's will perform better at the dragstrip.

A car with 3.90's would SHOW higher RWHP on the dyno then compared to 4.10's but we all know which performs better.

Yup.

what everyone said is right, they do affect dyno numbers... I went from 428RWHP to 412RWHP when I went from 3.31s to 4.10s, but my 1/8th mile times went down almost 2/10ths

My tuner just told me on Tuesday that 4.10s read out 15 horsepower less then 3.31s. Guess he wasn't far off

Which says more for the hot rods cams and s/c since I picked up 41rwhp after the cam swap and 4.10 install

For those that say f*** numbers, how many of you have ever looked at a thread that said "just got my whipple installed + dyno" or something of the sort to look at the numbers. Yea I agree it’s a tuning tool and who cares if your dyno run says 390 if you’re running high 11's or low 12's. For me though I’d love to be able to say I have 450 at the wheels and can run a 11.90. There are also the people that don't give 2 sh!ts about the track, but to be able to say I have 450, that’s all that matters to them. To each his own!

Well I've never even been to a track so I'm not really sure what a decent time is for around 450 and only minor suspension mods. I want to get into it but the closest track is over an hour away. I was primarily making an example.
