Heat Extractor For 2011+

New direction today. Since we are dealing with a more narrow cowl, I think a single extractor like the newer GT500 is a better bet. After spending a lot of time looking for a generic extractor vent and finding either super cheap, or very expensive pieces, I think making my own is the way to go.

I'm thinking that .100" 6061 aluminum sheet would be a good bet. I can use a sheet metal break to shape the pieces, then weld it together, and either paint or powder coat it (black, or even white). I can taper the flange thickness so it blends well into the hood, and secure it with small rivets. The hood is aluminum correct? So I won't have to worry about different expansion characteristics.

The actual vent portion will be vertical, or even inclined backwards, with an integrated catch lip and drain tube, to direct water when the car is parked in the rain.

Great idea. And while you're at it get rid of the hood blanket. I pulled mine the first week I had the car.

It would suck to have long term paint issues though. Especially here in central TX

I had some 1mm aluminum laying around so I built a dirty 1/3 scale mockup. Trying to brake such a small piece on my vice was a huge pain. It will no doubt be easier on the full size version, with a proper brake. But I'm thinking that making it out of more separate pieces and welding will be a better idea. Especially for the flange since it has to match the crown of the cowl. This model is missing a front piece for the flange.

Great idea. I've been trying to find some carbon fiber vents about 4" wide and 15-20" long to run up the sides of the hood. Since I have a black hood, thought the carbon would be a nice touch although unsure about functionality.

Argg, hammered with thermal-fluid systems work this week, and flying to the Superbike races at Barber this coming weekend, so I'm not sure how much progress will be made.

My plan is to make the top flange first. Once I'm happy with the size, shape, and quality of fit to the hood, I'll feel confident enough to use it to template the hood cutout and build the rest of it.

I'd like to taper the flange so it transitions nicely into the hood, and maybe countersink the rivet heads. Still unsure whether black or white would look best. Thoughts?

Are you going to remove the insulation under the hood? Id like to see how the webbing is laid out but I dont feel like removing mine.

I'll probably just cut through the hood, bracing ribs, and blanket in one shot with my jigsaw. You can get a decent look by just tugging on the blanket and peering under it.

Louvers would be cool if you already planned on repainting.

The blanket isn't there to protect the hood from engine heat. Removing the blanket will have zero effect on paint life. A good coat of wax however, will.

That's up for debate I guess. I'll be taking a closer look at which braces would be severed. Once the vent is secured to the hood, it will help reinforce the hood structure.

Then what is the purpose of the blanket? I also assumed it was there to protect the hood from high temps..

Pretty sure it is for nhv. Also heard it mentioned as a sort of fire blanket that is suppose to melt the plastic clips and smoother a small fire....not sure about that though.

I've been looking at the Run Cool hood louvers. Going to mockup a few sizes and shapes (rectangular and pointed) in cardboard and see how they look on the cowl. If suitable I will purchase a pair of high flow louvers and have them painted to match my silver wheels. Should look okay on my black GT CS which has a satin side decal (barely noticeable)

Yanked the blanket to have a look at the bracing and it's good news. Man too bad those front pockets are too far forward to do much, cause they'd look cool!

I think that even if I go to my full intended width, the bracing removed won't compromise strength.
