I can't get the steering shaft out of the way. I removed the coupling bolts and the dash boot nuts, but it won't compress. Any ideas?

I would suggest taking the bolt out of the steering rack on the drivers side, and loosening the one on the passenger side. Then you can pull the rack towards the front of the car on the drivers side and pull the shaft off there.

Remove the driver side rack bolt and loosen the pass side. Then push rack forward on the driver side. It will fall out. Gonna need a little muscle.

Need to move rack slightly. Before you completely disconnect make sure the splines of the shaft and rack are marked so they go back together in the same spot!

Take it out. One 8mm headed bolt and pull it out.

That's what I'm trying to do. Thing won't budge

The tube presses into the bottom of the block and is sealed with an O ring. Just wiggle/twist it and pull it out.

I can twist it, but even with 2 of us pulling it won't come out

Crawl underneath and gently pry it out with a screwdriver. The tube is flared at the base where it seats against the block.

Ok so I will say it. If you guys are asking questions about how to get a dip stick tube out then maybe this project is not for you?

Yeah, this is kind of scary.

I've had times where it was very difficult to get the tube out. It happens and what the op is experiencing can happen. It just doesn't want to come out sometimes.

So have I Bruce. I know that. Just have a bad feeling here that the outcome is going to piss off the OP!

I see the recessed o ring. It twists with the tube, but I can't get the tube to mover away from the block for the life of me
