Hey all,

I'm looking to buy an inexpensive set of wheels (18x10 drifts for $600, or something used?) and tires for use on track days. I intend to carry them to the track and swap them back and forth with my street tires.

Any recommendations on what tires to be shopping for?

I could try take-offs, but do they require any special handling when compared to street tires?

Or should I try NT01s? They seem attractive but not really super cheap.

Thanks,

Bob

Your in Frisco so contact Terry or Jason at Vorshlag I'm sure they can set you up. It's going to be hard to find wheels n Tyres for 600.

You want cheap? Look for a set of 285/40R18 Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar tires. They're not the best, buy you can find them for ~$100 per tire.

Ford Racing is blowing out there GT500 wheels, discontinued production on them. Tirerack is selling them for $150 a corner, 18x9.5. Not a light rim at all but very very strong and will hold up to any track abuse. I picked up a set last week.

They're factory OE rims that came on the GT500 which had the Brembo's on them so.... yes, I believe so.

Ah, I meant to say $600 for the wheels. I expect to have to pay more for tires.

My question is, which offers the lowest cost per track mile... NT01s, closeout slicks, take-off slicks?

Those wheels aren't bad, thanks for the link. But they are a little more expensive than the SVE Drift 18x10 wheel and they are 4 lbs heavier. So I think I still prefer the Drifts.

Bob what's your track experience? If you have tracked with slicks before try to find some take off slicks. Should be able to get them for $100. If you haven't tracked with slicks don't do it until you have a lot of experience on DOT tires. NT01, RE11, RS3, Rivals are all good. A lot of good things are being said about Rivals and they run $279 (275/35R18) per tire. All of the tires mentioned before should last a whole season of tracking the car. If you have tracked slicks before and it's been a while look at Proxes RA1 (275/35R18) $272 a tire. I don't know any wheel that can beat the price of the 18x10 drifts, so if that's your budget then that's your wheel.

Thanks for the reply 2013MustangGT.

I have not driven on slicks before. I'm an intermediate-ish driver on HPDE days. I've done about 12 track days so far.

And I'm not a terribly aggressive driver, partially because this is my DD car, and partially because thus far I've needed to drive home after each track day.

Having a second set of wheels seems like it would give me more room to drive faster w/o worrying about a spin that messes up my tire beads.

How do Rivals compare to NT01s and take-off slicks in terms of longevity and performance?

I have a set of amr silver wheels I'm asking 1100 for plus shipping.

Fronts are 18x9 Sumitomo High Performance HTR Z II Tire 255 45 18
Rears are NITTO Extreme Performance NT555R Drag Radial 285 40 18

about 1500 miles ( Vacation trip ) and 0 burn outs.

I went a different route. If interested and want pics just text me. 713 eight28 3011

The price is certainly right on those hoosier tires... but I don't know enough about that particular tire to know how it will wear, what pressures to run, and if it's inappropriate for my skill level.

Yeah if you're new...maybe not a slick??? I'd take a look at:
BFG Rivals
Bridgestone RE11
Hankook RS3
Nitto NT01
Dunlop Direzza Z2

All street tires that can be tracked/autocrossed.

Are those the same conti's Terry ran at TWS? I LIKE the price on the Hoosiers!

Yeah, I think he ran the DP tires though
