So I have the GT500 wheels, which ar 9.5" wide, and to go with the original fitment would have the 255/45/18s in front and 285/40/18s in back. The 255 do tramline way more than my original 235/50/18s did, but manageable. My quandry is do I go with the staggered replacement 9my current worn set up), or should I go 255/45/18 all around to be able to rotate them? The 255s do fit the rims better (flush with the edge of the wheel), but don't afford any protection if I "cozy" up to a curb, which the 285 do because they stick out further. The 255s would also have less unsprung weight...
your thoughts on the subject?

Do what you believe will fit you best. IMO, if you just hate having to pull the tires off to get them rotated then get 255's all around. If not, get staggered. You seem as if you prefer the 255's all around from what you said.

IMO staggered is weaksauce

go 275s all around, you won't be disappointed.

i run 285s all around and LOVE it, i might step up to 295s all around but i plan on runniung my car in redline time attack street class, which limits RWD cars to a 285 tire

I prefer the staggered look. I have 9.5 rears with 305s and they don't stick out. Also have 8.5 with 255s up front and looks bad ass. Can't rotate, but the fronts have lasted me two years so far.

it's just personal preference...i'm a fan of the staggered set up though, but from what you said i'd try and a 265 or 275 all around so you can still rotate.

I love the staggered look as it keeps a muscle car's track ready look. 1/4 mile track, not road course obviously

255/45/18 front & 305/45/18 in the rear.

Are the wheels the same size? That will make a difference if the rear wheels are wider than the fronts for rotating. If you're not sure it should tell you on the inside of the wheel.

since you are 18x9.5 all around... I'd run 275/40/18's on all corners...

Thanks for the feedback guys. The 275/40/18 all around sound like a good alternative. The thing is my Ford dealer has killer prices on the GY Eagle F1 Supercar tires: 255/45/18 ($139) and 285/40/18 ($179), plus gives me the nitrogen fill for free. Maybe I should go 285s all around? The only downside would be more tramlining than I'm getting with the 255s...which really only happens when going over road surface ruts in a longotudinal sense.

I have been running 17x9 wheels on all four corners for over 4 years, and have never used the same size tires in the back that I use in front. I have always had 255/50-17 Nittos up front. In the rear I ran 275/50-17 Nittos for a couple years, then switched to 325/45-17 M&Hs.

So, I vote for staggered for that classic muscle car look.

p.s. Moving this thread, too.

Those are good tires BTW. I have been running them for 18 months and they seem to wear well and have good traction although my car is not a daily driver.

I had 255/45 on my 8.5 Shelby wheels and 285/40 on the 9.5 rears. Now with the 9 inch bullits I am running 255/45 GY's on all four corners and as a non drag car i prefer the last setup better.

Thanks for weighing in Don and Graypony. I think I may just take Don's advice and go back with the staggered OEM-for-GT500 tires. The thing is, Graypony, I do run from a dig lot's (spanked a SC'd C5 vette from 20- 50 on Friday, although it wasn't a PD blower).

Hey everyone, sorry for digging up an old thread but it contains relevant information that I would like to expand on.

I have been running a staggered setup on my factory polished aluminum bullit rims which I believe are 8.5". For the last 3 or 4 years I have had 285/40/18 on the rears and 255/45/18 on the fronts. I would like to drop the staggered setup for the same all around.
I have a couple questions that I hope you guys can help me with.... firstly, it is mentioned that having the same all around is better for tire rotation. This must only be true if you are running tires that are non-directional. I have not yet found a great performance tire that is non-directional.

So my questions are...

What is the widest tire I can run on all four corners on the factory rims?
What is the best non-directional tire model/brand?
What is the best directional tire model/brand

I realise that this is subjective but I am looking for your favorites. I need to replace all 4 tires so now is the time for me to pick a strategy.

Many thanks

Agreed. I went from the original 235/50-17 to 275/45-18 Continental ExtremeContact DW's.

Talk about a different fucking car :thud:

I would think a 275 40 would fit. I have hankook ventus v12's. They are a directional tire and I'm impressed with them.

Thanks I will look into the Hankooks. We have them on our Jeep and they have been awesome. I have my eye on the Goodyear F1 Supercar as well as they are fairly cheap.
