The noise is only heard from idle to 1500rpm then goes away. It is almost sounds like a diesel at idle. You can only hear it when the car is warm. It seems to not affect the cars performance. It has made this noise ever since the motor was first started, and has about 4k on it and the noise is the same. The car does have comp cam 127300's with limiters. I have read all the posts about these noises and aftermarket cams. It seems some say to do VCT Lockouts to take care of this. My question is how many have had this noise that I am hearing and fixed it with putting lockouts in?

What is your oil pressure? I had issues with my pressure dropping under 20 psi at idle on warm days & the cam solenoids - which are activated by oil pressure - would start making the noise you describe. Bring the rpm up a bit and the noise goes away.

Switched to 5W-50 oil & problem solved.

Note: I have a Roush forged shortblock and this was their recommendation. It's also the oil they recommend in their P51s, RH540s, etc that use that shortblock.

I had the same noise with a built motor and blower cams with VCT and I'm just finishing up a short block rebuild that will have VCT locked and I'm hoping the ticking will not be there, I'll be picking it up tomorrow.

It does sometimes when really hot drop below 20psi, like 19psi. But it makes the noise above 20psi when at idle. I think next oil change I might try 5w-50.

Let me know if it works out for you!

Do you think the heavier viscosity oil like 5W50 is simply addressing a symptom (low oil pressure) of a real problem that's gone unchecked? Just wondering. Would you run that oil in the winter?

Maybe you have a busted timing chain tensioner and your timing chain is floping a little more freely than it's supposed to. I have this issue right now. I noticed it Monday when I put the stock cams back in. waiting on metal tensioners to get here

I'm not sure the timing chain has been loose for 4k miles. The noise never gets louder.

That was my feeling when Roush suggested it - a bandaid to cover an underlying clearance issue. However, since this all happened, I've followed this up at every opportunity & found that it's not an uncommon problem with built 4.6 shortblocks - no matter who built it. As I said, Roush recommends that oil with all its forged shortblocks, which come with a 1 yr, 12K mile warranty. If clearances were causing a problem, I'm sure Roush would be under the gun trying to fix it. So far, it ain't happenin'.

FWIW, even in 95 degree temps, in traffic, my oil pressure will drop to 18 psi at 750 rpm but jumps to 30 psi by 1000 rpm and 40 psi by 1500 rpm. So the low oil pressure is a problem ONLY at idle when hot.

I see no problem running that oil in the winter. 5W is 5W no matter what the upper end of the blend is. And remember that it IS a blend. It just has a higher resistance to thinning at high temps.

went through the same problem you need to zero out the vct under 1500 rpm

They are talking about zeroing it out in the tune under certain rpm's, not physically.
I know, what I am asking is can I do that in the tune with the limiters or do I need lockouts? Or dose it matter? I just don't want to go in and change it in the tune and mess something up.

You have to do it in the tune. With limiters u have to limit the movement to 20 degrees anyway.what's happening not enough oil pressure at idle for heavier springs. Limiters won't stop that noise below 1500. Lockouts will though. Also if it continues the roll pins in the phasers will shear.

Phasers could have been damaged but that's more likely to happen when people use air tools when tightening the bolts

Cool, so I need to get lockouts and then change the tune? Correct? Thanks for all your help. Is there anything else I need to watch out for when getting the lockouts? Like will they work with everything in my motor?

I had the noise forever on my stock motor. The motor was destroyed 3 days ago from the noise. Broke a follower which in turn broke all kinds of crap. All I did was start the car.
