Hi everyone! I'm brand new here. Lucky me just picked up a 2007 GT convertible with only 49K in absolutely mint condition. I want to put in 4.10 gears for better acceleration. It currently has 3.73's....I did a little research and it looks like a gear swap is a very difficult job (I would NOT be doing it myself) with very strict measurements and tolerances, and small parts that if not done right can cause overheating and the gears shredding themselves to bits. Am I being a little overconcerned or paranoid? Do any of you have any good stories or horror stories with gear swaps?

Welcome from Miami, FL.

Nice GT.

Installation is very simple, setting up the back lash is what can be difficult. I suggest keeping the 3:73… you won’t feel much going to 4:10 from where you’re at.
Thanks!!

gear swaps are easy,,
its getting everything apart thats the pain,

the measurements arent hard and you gotta pay attention .

there is room for error ,
im a meathead, i did it no problem, (but im very mechanically inclined )
first time and quiet as a ghost , and still no problems

ive heard of people taking the cars to a garage to get it done and they come back loud cuz the install was botched ,, (but they will say its normal lol)

you do need quite a bit of tools,, the main one being a press with bearing install \remove tools

as for you wont notice much difference ?

unless you take two identical cars and setups and run them together ,, you will never know..

but seeing how the gearing isnt that much off from one another ,
id say it is a safe bet to say you wont notice much difference,

but if the cars were side to side racing , same driver, car, mods, ect ect,
the 4.10 would pull away period.
and the only chance the 3.73 would have to reel you back in ,, would be after the 127-130ish mph mark,

thats when you start running out of gear but the 3.73 has just a little bit more left to "reel" you in..

right before i redid my cylinder head, i raced a new Camero v8 on the highway.(in mexico of course)
i kept puling away from him, but at about the 115mph mark , he starting reeling me in ,

but ill tell ya the look on his face when we first took off (from about 60mph)

and as i pulled away ,, you can tell he thought i was a stock 3v being cocky lol

i surprise alot of cars when i race , (for the money i spent i sure hope so lol )
now its time to boost and throw a rod into oblivion lol

It is a fairly easy, straight forward job. When everything goes as planned, which is 9 out of 10 times. While there is only a bit of difference between those two ratios, I think you will notice a difference. I run 4.10's and I've hit 180 mph and it still has a bit left in it. My car is by no means stock. A stock 4.6 would not wind up enough to get anywhere near that mph. I really would have thought even a stock engine would have more top end with the 4.10. Regardless of which gear is in it, you're still not getting anywhere near redline in high gear. But apparently I was mistaken, on hearing others experiences.
