I do use them... but there is alway the possiblity of picking something up off of the finish that can cause marring and scratches.

When I wash my vehicles.. I use the two bucket method and follow the natural airflow of the vehicle. I rinse the car down and then spay a car wash soap/water solution on the panels prior to using the washmitts. I also move my washmitts in a straight line motion.... if there should be any grit...
