Is that heavy of a weight oil common? If so why?

Not really common, there are a few builders who choose to build these engines this way.
The Saleen stroker was run with 10w40
Brenspeeds uses 10w40.
Main and connecting rod bearings are the same as those packages.
I'm running 2618 pistons with a .0045" piston to wall clearance
the other use a .002" piston to wall clearance and probably a 4032 alloy.

I had talked to quite a few builders and read alot of other build threads and put my trust into this shop.
seems to be 2 schools of thought on this and alot of compelling arguments, but at the end of the day I went with my shops recommendations.

Sorry Lito I think they are at +.003 not below deck.
When I talked to Michael at L&M he wasn't exactly thrilled with the choice of 20w50 or the clearances.
rod clearance - .00225"
mains - .0025"
side clearance - .018"
Pretty Loose.

The rod bearings and side clearance are in spec with a stock 3v motor and the mains are only .0006" over spec. I've only used 20w-50 in a motorcycle.

I'd get it out of the car pronto, but that's just me.

I use 20w50 in my boat aswell.
But you are right about the specs.
Mush better selection of thinner oils here too.
I have read your threads and do know you have had success with your projects, so your advice is valued Bruce.
But I gotta go with the shops recommendations on this as they did build it.
If I can safely go down to thinner oil with there blessing I will probably do so.
