Anybody heard of this race? This ain't "LeMons", it's "Lemons". Cars can't cost more than $500, and there's two days of racing, eight hours each day. You can get black flagged for leading the pack, and be forced to put on an Elvis outfit and run through the pits singing "Blue Suede Shoes". There's the throne of shame, a toilet with wheels. And on an on.

My buddy and his friends have been doing this race for 2 years with an old BMW, and their team is called the General Flea (Lee) - complete with Confederate Flag, etc.

His fifth driver just dropped out, so I get to fill his place for the race in late March! He said it's really cool, and you actually are on a real road course where the speeds (at least in his car) reach around 120 mph. I can't wait!

Edit: this may be Pitstop rather than chit chat. Sorry, mods.

I've heard of this. I read about it on Jalopnik all the time. It sounds like a blast, and people enter some downright crazy cars and everyone seems to be in it for a good time. Hope you have fun, and good luck!

Car & Driver has done articles on this. The full rulesheet and prices/fees are here:

The $500 doesn't include any safety equipment. In other words you can put a 5 point harness in the car and it doesn't count toward that $500. I've actually thought of doing this. I figure it would cost about $4K to put forth a serious effort.

you can deduct what you sold off the car to get it's price down to $500. But as someone else said, the rollcage, brakes, seat, fire system do not count towards the total cost of the car. 24 hours of lemons is getting pretty spendy, there's another series that right now is pretty cheap, like 24 hrs was called Chump Cars. Thinking about doing it this year in Portland.

OP, you'll love it, have fun !

24 Hours of Lemons fees for 2011; 4 drivers, 1 car, 4 pit crew= $1200.

Entry: $500 per car $100 per driver $75 for non-drivers. (Each team must have 4-6 drivers.) This fee covers registration, track time, paddock pass, track insurance, on-site ambulance crew, sweatshop-made commemorative crap, and anything else we come up with by then. Non-driving team members get all the same bennies except track time.
