4.6 3v phaser repair? Weld or tap in roll pin?

Just received a new timing kit today in the mail and one of the phaser trigger wheels are a little loose. One of the 3 dowel pins is missing. On the inside of the gear.

I came pretty close to welding a tack in there this evening to fix it but had second thoughts about it

Called ford support about the defective product but they told be to get bent.

anybody think I’ll be all good putting a tack in there or a roll pin or something?

Or Maybe extract one of the old dowel pins from the old phaser instead and insert it in the new phaser?

I honestly don’t know exactly what’s going on in that little guy and if doing something like that would cause adverse effects if I try to rescue it

But in my mind ford stuck something in there and it fell out so why can’t I? Lol

It is unfortunate that Ford did not provide you with support for the defective new sprocket. That is not right.
I feel this is the path that needs further evaluation so they make it right and also fix the problem in their production line, whether another call (possibly getting a different support person and ask for a supervisor if not getting anywhere) or an email to their support team.

Was this a Ford Performance kit or individual, pieced-together parts for the timing kit? Did you buy direct from Ford or from another vendor? You may find additional support from the vendor?

If the pin was found missing, I suspect that other QA steps are suspect on this part, and welding-in a workaround may result in a part that will fail earlier than suspected and with no warranty or support for a user-welded fix.

You are playing with fire IMO and if it were my car, I would try again to get support from the place I bought the part from before putting in the engine. Good catch on diagnosing the missing pin before installing the phaser sprocket.

I’ll give the repair a go anyways and if I don’t feel like it’s sufficient enough or seems to hokey I’ll just buy another phaser

haste makes waste,,,,
i try to live by that when working on cars or fixing pretty much anything,

you can be haste, and try to weld it and hope the heat dont distort or do anything else.
there is a %70 chance all would be ok
but there is about a %30 chance the unknown could happen right away , or a few miles or hundred miles ,until boom,

there is always the "it might be ok and is"
but if i were you , id buy a new phaser or lock them out ,,

but seeing how you found one thing wrong with it, whos to say there isnt something else that you didnt notice or cane see?

Send it back to wherever you got it. That is not right and dispute it on your credit card for defective product. There is no way you should accept a part that is not in good condition.

Do not install it without the dowel pin. The cam will walk on you. My dowel pin was sheared off and I had timing issues until I replaced it. Originally thought it was the solenoid but after replacing that the timing was still having issues. It wasn't until I was installing new phasers that I discovered the missing pin.

As others have said, for the price of a phaser it’s not worth the risk of an engine.

I would also dispute the charges with the company you bought the kit from until they resolve. I wouldn’t try welding as you won’t know for sure it’s fine until it lets go, then you are in for a bad day.

its all good, I stopped at my local dealer and bought another phaser after work today.

I need to get the ball rolling on swapping out my valve terrain and redoing my timing.

I’m not going to fight with ford about it, it’s just not worth my time. I reached out and they said no on the phone and they can’t help me

Guy at the parts counter gave me $80 off the new phaser today after I told him my story so I’ll take what I can get and move on. Is what it is

Yeah, it was a complete timing kit. All boxes marked “ ford performance parts”. All parts had ford part#s an and the scan emblems on them. Also paid the ford performance price for em to
