I was on my way to work this morning, drove about 20 miles when the car in front of me slowed to make a left, I downshifted and slowed down.

When I tried to upshift again, it would not go into any other gear. It seems as though it is stuck in 2nd gear. I can move the stick forward towards 1st and feels like it falls in but does not.

When driving if I push the clutch in and pull straight backward as to go further in 2nd it makes a slight grinding noise. With the car off and clutch in, the shifter will only go straight forward and back too easily, if I move it to try to go to 3rd, 4th, 5th, or reverse, it will not fall in the notches.

I cant get into neutral either. If anyone can shed some light on what happened, I would appreciate it. Thank You.

Sound like a bent or broken shift fork, just my opinion.

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking the same thing, but could this happen while normal driving this morning without banging through the gears? Or could it have been slowly failing and finally caught up with me?

It could have been getting weak over time, not an expert but there are only so many times you can bend a hanger. (only analogy I can think of) lol

Yeah, that makes sense. Now to decide whether to take in to the shop to get my trans. fixed, or buy a take off w/ 5k on it for $600 - $700 delivered, and install myself.

I have a feeling doing it myself will be the much cheaper route, but the downtime will probably be a bit longer due to delivery time.

I think taking apart the tranny via a shop would be more expensive than throwing in a good working tranny yourself and at that point with your tranny you have to ask yourself what else is getting weak.

Warranty? I have the ESP and I am getting an intermittent problem with 2nd which to me is either a bent for, or bad synchro. Brandon at Libertygears.com has been good about helping me figure out my problem. I emailed him the am and they are about 5-6 weeks out if you send in your tranny for work. Might be a good place to start.
