Got all my stuff yesterday but i add up Fast etch, pre prep and i will paint black gloss. I dont know if i will even need the Fast etch and the rust converter because i have all the power tools to grind everything except under the coil springs mounting base i think it will be the only place that will be not possible to grind.

I am just waiting to receive the rear end back from the shop that is installing the axle seals, then i will weld the Steeda hardcore anti roll bar tabs, then prep and paint.

It is still little bit cold here in Idaho for the project but i guess i will heat up the garage then take out the heater and paint.

yeah. thanks. the only thing i had wrong was that i work the whole project in the shop i work and i had absolutely no rust, only under the springs holder base and it was just a little bit. i used the rust converter and it didn't want to work, so i called eastwood and they told me to clean that out and just use the encapsulator. If you dont have rust it wont work. everything else was good even the upper bushing. That was just a pain to install because it wanted to come out due to be a two piece bushing.

I used a different method. Rustoleum makes a rust sealer/paint/primer all in one spray. I bought a bottle of it and finished off a bottle of my Krylon Ultra Flat black to dull the gloss down. The Rustoleum says to degrease everything but I just did it straight away without any real prep other than a solid wash of the under carriage and a complete dry.

Results worked well enough for me! By the time this axle rusts enough to fall apart if it didn't get totally sealed it will probably be time to replace the dang thing anyway:

Results after painting:

I did touch up the areas that still had rust showing.

After 6 months, 3 of which were spent in a garage the remainder on salt/light snow rain covered roads it looks good. It needs a bath but it is what it is. Ohh, and some jackass installed some scaffolding under the car, not sure what it is for though! :D

Luillo,

Can you list the products you used to paint your axle please? Did you grind off all the rust first and then just painted it? I like how smooth it looks. I am looking for a spring project to do and I think this is it.

Like i said before. these thread help a lot but be careful, if you clean the rear end very good like i did because i had a lot of tools and my axle housing was fairly new, 2011 the rust converter will do more bad than good. Rust converter actually work on rust, if is no rust it will just be like gum and will never dry. and like the OP said, first coat very light then a second.

i end up cleaning the rust converter after 2 days and applying the encapsulator which are the pics you see i posted. i actually painted mine gloss. i will post finish product now with bushings and all done.

The fast etch is to clean rust out but i dont think is necessary if you can wife brush it out.
