I picked up a Ford Racing LDS at a swap meet. Its brand new and still in a box. Its the Ford Racing M-4204-F318C. Would it be worth it to put it on my car?
The car has basic mods, full exhaust ,long tubes ,C.A.I. , 4:10 gears , tune , etc. Adding cams and a some type of power adder in the back half of the year.
opened up diff, found no preload on carrier bearings (unrelated, it's just that's how ford performs.. they had been in the diff 8 times before for bearing failures.) Installed my own detroit truetrac, preloaded some new bearings
The Ford clutch type LSD is not really an upgrade. The clutches wear ridiculously fast in any sort of autocross, track use, or even drag racing. The carbon clutch upgrade barely increases the lifespan. Get a gear type differential like an Eaton or Torsen or don't bother.
Eaton tru-trac works superb. I installed a bobs auto sports catch can as well.... installed on pass side of axle on 05-10 cars. Catch can bolted to underside of car body...with rubber hose down to oem axle overflow relief vent. No more puking gear oil. Rubber hose is long enough to allow for full suspension droop, when car is on a 2 post lift. https://bobsmachine.com/product/mustang-2005-14-axle-reservoir-kr-style/
Eaton tru trac relies on friction, so no synthetic used, nor friction modifier. Trus trac uses dino gear oil,
85W-140. Tru trac is a maintenance free item. Puts the tq to rear tire with the most traction.
This is how it works.
2 versions of the tru-trac. the version for oem 31 spline axles uses 3 pinion gears per side. The HD version uses 4 pinion gears per side.
The 3.5:1 'bias ratio' means the max tq that can be applied to wheel with most traction is 3.5 'x'. Other wheel gets just 'x'. Dry straight rd, it's normally a 50-50 split. It's totally transparent in operation...shifting the tq to where it needs to go.
The tru-trac is half the price of the Torsen. Tru-trac doesn't need a differential cooler either. Your article was well written....along with your other articles.
