I really like my ReoLink 4k system. Picked up the kit with 4 cameras and the NVR for about $500 shipped from the manufacturer.

The cameras are PoE (power over ethernet) so I did have to run the provided Cat6 cables, but it's worth it. Plus with a NVR I don't have to pay for cloud storage... Everything is saved on the recorder in my house. Phone app is pretty straight forward too. Can plug the recorder into an open HDMI on your main TV to have a 4k Ultra HD surveillance monitor any time you want just by switching the input on the TV.

My system is not hooked up to my computer and I do not have it linked to my phone or any outside system. I'm not smart enough to do that. It has served my needs well with the singular exception of an extension power supply cord I bought for one camera which shorts out whenever it feels like it. The signal back to home base is wireless but you still need to wire power to the cameras.

I went the opposite way. Decent quality video and a crapload of cameras, 16 actually.
these are still avail on closeout, and they are pretty decent if you want to stick with analog.

Used this DVR

Think that one is discontinued, but this one seems to be same thing.

and this 4T drive (gives a week full recording on all 16 channels)

Pretty cheap @ $862 for a full 16 camera system (not including cables, which can be pricey if you have to go on long runs, but at least you know you won't have interference issues like wireless). One thing this has that many cheaper systems don't, it allows you to hook up a switched device for every camera, independently, so you could have it not alert or record unless say a door switch is activated.

I recommend you at least get a DVR that can use more cameras than you need, as you are going to want coverage on something you didn't think of before you set it up (IE, a garbage can animals always seem to be messing with). Would have been impossible to get adequate coverage with minimal cameras and at night, even great quality cameras are only as good as the IR you spray, which even with add-on IR arrays, is hard to light up a full view, too far off. (I even added a large IR array on one camera, and it wasn't enough to light up whole view that was setup for max coverage/range)

I'm more interested in if anyone is mucking around on my property during the day, then who it actually is. Having E-mail alerts and being able to intensely program motion sensing means you eventually figure how to all but eliminate false alarms.

That is what I have, the RLK-8. I really like it and the features it has. I have a monitor set up where the NVR is. Also have HDMI to ethernet converter coming out of it and take CAT6 into my living room, then another HDMI to ethernet converter. So I can change inputs on my living room TV and see all of the camera screens. I like the ability to check them remotely via the phone app too. And being able to do admin work on the NVR from my home PC via their PC app is nice. The movement masking is easy. And being able to have multiple options of actions upon movement detection is nice.

Mine is 3 years old. When I purchased mine it came with four 4MP cameras. I have since added additional cameras, two of which are 5MP. Honestly can't tell the difference. LOL. But bought the higher MP cameras because I added them "remote" out at my shop. Since they were going to cover a wider field of view, in my head the higher MP would make a difference.

The ONLY grip I have about it has nothing to do with the actual system. Insects and spiders.. UGH. The IR lights attracts bugs. Spiders cash in on the unlimited food supply around the lights. So it is not uncommon during the warmer months at night for my friggin' email to blow up from security emails filled with pictures of spider webs waving in the breeze in front of a camera. Or there to be alien looking winged insects taking a close up selfie. I typically say screw the emails and turn it off in the summer.

I'm really liking the Eufy kit. I have the 2-camera setup, but only have installed one so far. Their claim of a 1-year battery life might be legit. It's been mounted for about 3 months and the app shows that the battery is still full. It's wireless, so no messing with wires. It has a home base which acts as the intermediary between the camera and the WiFi. The base has an SD card that stores 1 year of video before it starts to overwrite, so there is no cloud to worry about, nor any recurring monthly payments. The app is solid as well. Picture quality is good and the only drawback is having to pull it down to charge the battery.

After a ton of research, I just purchased the Arlo Pro-2 4-Camera system. I am eager to get it installed and see how it performs. I have family and friends that have these systems and they seem to have positive reviews.
