i know this probably belongs in the cleaning section but this section gets more traffic.

Anyway I couldnt really find an answer but what do you guys use to clean the aluminum inserts on the steering wheel and dash? The steering wheel has gunk all over it that sort of comes off when I scrape it with my finger nail. The dash isnt bad but could use something to get rid of the slight discoloration it seems to have.

Also I posted in another thread a few months back that a crack just suddenly appeared on the top of my dash. What can I fill this crack with?

Here is a pic of the wheel and dash. Its hard to tell but the pic of the wheel on the very right you can see where I started scraping the crap off with my nail.

Unfortunately, that's the finish you're scraping off there and it's probably going to all come off over time. You can take some never-dull to the areas (test a small spot), but thinking you can (1) remove and get it re-coated, or (2) replace w/another (better) wheel.

As far as the crack, auto repair shops can melt that back together and make it look like new, or replace w/one that's not cracked. Filling it will look like crap (IMO).

I thought that too but there are some spots that I peeled that there is another layer that can peel so Im not sure if Im taking off the finish. I thought about getting a 11-14 steering wheel with radio controls anyway.

Hmm ok so maybe a shop can fill it. I dont know of any good shops nearby but Ill probably search around. Ive toyed with the idea of swapping the interior for a 10-14 one but every thread I read about it people just say its not worth it. I would just cut and extend the wires I need but Im not sure about the gauges and hvac.

Anyway, thanks for the info.

It's just dirty. Soap and water will take the scum off of the plastic.

The dash... well you could always get one of those fuzzy dash covers. Lol.

Baby wipes. That’s all you need for that gunk. Probably a combination of sweat, dirt, and if a female previously drove it, hand lotion.

Ill definitely try the soap and water trick first. As far as dash cover ehhhh lol. Im just going to live with that one for now.

It definitely is sweat and Id imagine the humidity because of how bad it is here in Florida. If soap and water doesnt do the trick Ill try baby wipes thanks.

Concerning the dash you should check with some used car dealers where you're at. The ones near me have people they use for seat repairs, paint chips, interior dings and things like that. They can probably steer you
too somebody that might help.

I had a Mercedes that was gunked up so bad it was just nasty. I gave up on soap and water, then someone told me about baby wipes. Came right off and they are gentle on the finish (hey they are for wiping babies after all!)

Ill definitely give a dealer a call, great idea thanks.

I ended up trying the baby wipes and it did clean the dirt but I think Iceman was correct and it is the finish thats coming off. Ill work on it some more when I get the chance in case itll come off with more elbow grease.

I noticed while driving that when its hot out you cant even see the crack in the dash, just look at the pics its like its gone. But as soon as the ac cools the interior it rears its ugly head. Does anyone think a light coat of epoxy would do anything?
