    hello,
I’m seeking some advice on a new noise that sounds like a lash adjuster/ lifter gone bad for the second time. To give you a bit of back story about 5 months ago I had a ticking noise coming from passenger valve cover. Upon research and some knowledge I have I took apart the valve cover and didn’t see anything out of the ordinary but figured it had to be a follower or lifter.
So with my 4.6 hitting 100k miles I decided to have my heads remachined and cleaned up to be like new, and at the same time I replaced the lifters and cam followers all the way around and put my bigger cams back in and redid all the seals and everything. Started her up and she ran fine, tune was a little weird at first but quickly everything was sounding good.

Fast forward now and today I discovered a louder “lifter” type noise from the same spot on the passenger side valve cover. With all new parts and the heads being completely done over could there potentially be a underlying issue I’m missing or not thinking of that someone with a lot of experience with this motor might know? Any help would be appreciated.

Also I’ve been having some issues with the start up on my mustang. Some times it will start fine other times it will just tick and not turn over unless jumpstarted. I tested the battery with an ohm reader and got 12.4v and tested the alternator and got 14.8v, once started it runs fine.

Any advice would be great if someone could point me in the right direction. Thank you!

Sounds like you have a bad ground - goes to a a stud on the engine mount on the passenger side. Maybe it's loose.

Check your oil pressure with a mechanical gauge.

I found an F150 Coyote engine with the exhaust valves made from tin cans for about $300 from a friend - 2015 heads are a great upgrade, am also doing Mahle PowerPack pistons for high compression, Boss 302 rods. As long as I don't wind up with the BBQ/Typewriter tick, should be a great engine.

The 6g alternators on the 05-08 Mustang are a known issue, even when shown to be working correctly thru testing. They leak AC voltage and make the car act weird.
The fix is going to the 09-10 Desno alternator

could the "bigger cams" be the issue? not drilled thru oil galley or something like that? seems like the only part that's still the same if your describing your problem correctly.

I considered it too, when the heads came out I checked the cams and they’re in great shape, they’ve been in for probably the last 20k miles with no issues, the old lifters so I’ve heard only last around 100k miles before they start to give up so I thought I would’ve been able to fix that issue right there. I did however start running different oil in the car, could that maybe be a possibility?

I knew that. That is just my passive aggressive way of asking 86 wtf he was talking about.

Where did you hear the lifters are only good for 100k miles? Nice round number.

I actually forget might have been somewhere on a forum or online for recommended maintainance for certain issues. Sure enough some of those lifters seemed on there last leg. But again brand new lifters.... making noise again, I’m wondering if there is a deeper issue. Seems to be coming around cylinder 3 or 4 same as the last.

I'd pull that valve cover and spin the engine over, check to see if you have lash on the base circle. Maybe something very obvious will be wrong.

If you don't have lash on the base circle with the engine off, the lifters are working, right? Even without oil in them, they have springs. They take forever to bleed down. I fired my engine up after two years in rebuild, and I had preoiled, mind you, but not a sound. Just started running like the last time I shut it off. Only 100+ more hp :bigbird:
