So I have had an 05 gt for around 2 years now and just recently heard something in the rear end ended up taking it in a little to late and the whole rear end has came apart. Turns out the mechanic that replcaed my gears didnt do that great of a job... ouch anyways.. does anyone have any good places to find a whole new complete rear end? looking at the one on american muscle for 1,300 if anyone has any other suggestions they would be greatly appreciated.

$1300 for a replacement is quite high. And yeah, what's wrong with it as to why you have to replace it? If the axles are ok and the housing ok, then all you need is a proper gear job?
Where are you located? People may be able to recommend reputable shops in your area.

i saw that rear end but i dont want to drop 3.31 ratio in there im trying to get 3.73 gears back in seeing thats what i had before with the money for new gears it comes out close to 1300 still.. im from north carolina.. problem is i just came outta surgery and have a broken left foot.. hard to drive manual haha.. i just had my buddy tow it down to a guys shop ive used before its not the best but he is fairly honest...i havent had a chance to look at the rear end he just said the gears came loose and all the bolts and it snapped my rear end and pretty much everything is ruined in there... im not for sure if the axle is bad itself but im not 100 on that he recommended the complete new rear end from the damage cause rebuild kits are fairly expensive as well... thanks for the help guys

Sorry for your troubles. Best bet is new takeoff IMO

Also pleas review the posting rules, how tom fix a rear is tech, where to buy one is not.

understand got a little off subject there still trying to figure out how to get it "fixed" as well but with that being said is it possible to snap the whole rear axle that easily? Just wondering cause they guy just said the bolts worked them self loose and came out? just wondering if that was possible to ruin my whole axle that way

Hard to say without getting it opened up. But I would think the diff and gears would be the only thing needing replacement.

You can try eBay or amazon etc, but 12-1300 is the avg I've seen for a fully assembled rear end. Like mentioned above you shouldn't need a new housing unless something went seriously wrong. You can order gears, bearings and a trutrac for $800. Look for a reputable car or 4X4 shop to charge 4-500 for install. You can go to a dealership if you wanna feel safe but expect to fork over $900 for labor.

I have had instances where rear ends have "come apart" and usually the housing and axles are fine. Only time i have had to replace the housing is when a pinion bearing seizes up and spins the race in the housing. Or of course a broken/bent housing.

Obviously I can't say for sure without seeing it, but it would be a lot cheaper to just but a new gear set, install kit and possibly a new carrier. You can get a true trac or something better than stock while spending much less than for a whole rear end assembly. Possibly a new cover to. That usually gets damaged as well.

Sounds like your shop isn't comfortable doing the gear swap and would rather just install a complete, assembled rear end. I would start checking around for a gear specialist in your area and have the car taken to a better qualified shop.

The American Muscle rear end is the 8.8 used in the GT500, so you're getting the upgraded components for $1,200. That includes shipping too, which is a really a good value IMO.

And after spending all that money on a "GT500" unit (basically a different pinion bearing and carbon clutches), it will still have a limited slip with clutches that eventually wear out. The bang per buck just isn't there. If it where indeed that trashed that it couldn't be rebuilt, then find a used one and have whatever gear ratio you want installed. Just my pofessional opinion of course. Good luck with whatever you choose to do and like mentioned above, you may want to find a different shop that is more comfortable with setting up rear ends.

I was referring to the New Take Off rear vs. the American Muscle one. If you go the new, take off route, the AM one is a much better bang for the buck.

You can get a brand new GT500 3.73 rearend through Ford Racing. Retail is about $1400. I could sell one for about $1200, but there's also shipping. If you could find an FRPP dealer near you that would hook you up, that would be the best route. It's the 2012 model that's painted, 3.73 ratio, has the aluminum finned diff cover and is brand spanking new.

I just sold one here locally about 3 days ago.

Ahhh gotcha! Yeah that makes sense and it will have the gear ratio he wants. I just know the new take off is the cheapest I have seen around the net over the years.

thanks for the help guys... talked to the shop today apparently the axle itself is fine so he thinks... he says he is going to get into it more today..i do know i bent the housing and pinion and all of that in there due to the gears coming loose.. i haven't seen it either due to the foot injury but the shop thinks the safe route is to go ahead and replace the axle. i know he isn't making money off parts or labor really seeing how he says i can do or buy whatever i want which makes me feel a little better. and i do know he has the cheapest labor around.. i guess that makes sense to go ahead and replace the whole axle and start over considering the rebuild would be around the same?

Yes, if you have to rebuild the whole thing for anywhere near $1000 or higher, just replace the whole rear with a new one.

not sure whats done to your car and im assuming you dont race it much as your considering another stock rear end but if you do this is the perfect time to upgrade it as your already throwing $1300 into it...
