I was thinking the same thing. I had spoiler holes filled on my 2001 GT and it wasn't half of that, granted it was a white car and I guess blending wasn't an issue when it came to painting and maybe it being a fiberglass OEM decklid makes a different in labor...I dunno.

Mine's been on for over a year now and not a trace of rust. When I put it on I could have sworn it was plastic but I maybe wrong. Nice to see Vaughn chiming in with a no bullshit answer and making things right.

Mine had to be welded in, filled, smoothed, primed, and painted. I'm sure there was a lot of work involved, especially if the metal warped at all from the welding.

I hear people saying that a lot. I don't know why; it seems so hard for me to miss that detail. Lol. It's the one thing that makes me so careful installing it the first time. The metal is so thin, it's very easy to bend and sounds like metal. You could make your own from a sheet of aluminum if you wanted but it won't have the rolled edges on the back side to make it smooth.

The email response from RTR:

We would like to take this chance to apologize for any and all inconvenience's this problem has caused you. We pride ourselves on quality parts that not only look great, but also function properly and are made to last the duration of the vehicle. Clearly we have let you down with this part, but we are hoping you will find our solution to be fair and understand that we want to make this right. Due to being unable to find a new supplier that can execute production in the manner we expect we have decided to not make any more of these stamped panels. We have decided to remanufacture the part in plastic with the same design and overall look. We are estimating this process to take 4-6 months. With that being said below are the options that we can offer at this time to remedy the problem in which you experiencing.

1) We can put you on a list to receive one of the new parts when they are in stock. Again this will take 4-6 months but you will receive the new part prior to any being shipped out for new sales.

2) We can offer you a full refund on the decklid. Send me the original purchase receipt and I will approve and have a check mailed out to you, or issue a refund on your CC, depending on when it was purchased and whom it was purchased from. Once we have the new part ready to go I can offer you a significant discount to get that part. In the meantime you can either leave the panel you have on your car or place the Ford OEM part back on your car for the time being.

3) You can go to a local body shop get a quote to fully sand down and repaint your panel. Once you have the quote, submit it to me and I will get any and all reasonable repair quotes approved within 24 hours. Once approved I will send out a repair kit consisting of the items necessary to remove, and reinstall the panel for repair, and have a check mailed out for the repair costs.

Let me know which of these options work best for you and we will get everything handled right away.

Sincere apologies

Wow that is great. I would go with #2. You get your money back plus a deep discount to buy the new one once available.

I'm replying to Jess about that option too. I'm curious how much the new version will cost and just how big of discount it will be. If it's like a forum discount of 6% or something common like that I not sure I will bother with that option.

I already have the quote of $350 or so on the repaint on the panel by a local shop (includes stripping bad paint job, priming, and painting). And Jess said that check would be made out to me on that end of it.

I worried despite there great customer response and reasonable price point....I can't see them producing a panel like the OEM version minus a faux cap. I think it will be just a shiny sheet of bent urethane.

Tomorrow I'm gonna see if I can get a estimate from a shop to shave the panel as mentioned before. At least now I can weigh options besides living with the stock panel.

Now THAT right there is customer service! :bravo: I'd probably think about option 2 if it were me.

Well I just got back from the body shop. They advised that they could shave the spoiler holes and shave the decklid panel area for not much more than I predicted. That includes repainting the decklid and everything. Need less to say I was surprised. These guy do good work from what I seen.

Number 2. Then buy the new version at discount and sell because you changed your mind :p

Also sell your rusty bit to pony up there.

Even cheaper decklid shaving

Sounds like if you get the refund and sell your panel then you will wind up having it shaved for less than the cost of the whole decklid.

Car is to be dropped off at the body shop today to have the decklid shaved and holes filled. Smooth decklid and wingless. I should have pictures by the end of the week. I'll post them here and my dormant build thread
