It depends. If you're removing both at the same time, it's much easier to drop them together as a unit from underneath together with the k member and front suspension. It's easier to separate the transmission from the engine when it's sitting on wooden pallets on the ground.
If it's engine only, you'll need to remove the radiator, fan assembly, and AC condenser to create enough room to move the engine forwards and lift it out with a crane. Removing the hood is advisable here to create vertical space.
Dino brings up a good point. I guess it also depends on your work space. If you’ve got the tools and space, you can drop the whole thing out the bottom.
The 3v comes out the top pretty easy though, as long as it has stock headers on it. I left my radiator in, pulled the fan, and even left the hood on. Came right out.
Knowing what I know now Dino,s post is the quickest way to removing the engine transmission as a whole. I separated the transmission in the car and found the auto transmission is extremely heavy and awkward to handle with on your own transferring it from a transmission jack.
