Timing Chain

Right before it breaks (smart-ass answer).

I like to change them when there starts to be a lot of slack in the chain. If you can see the cam from the oil filler tube, turn the engine a little with a wrench (at crankshaft), back and forth, just a little, and you can tell how much slack there is by when the cam moves when you turn the crank.

How many miles are on the car?

And there's 2 chains; on the 4.0L, one in back, one up front.

Well, these have chains, not belts. So they'll last longer. In fact, the guy who bought my engine has a 4.0 in an Explorer with over 150K miles, and the chains are finally worn out and getting loose.

lol. its got about 81,000 on it. when i had my 300zx the belt snapped around 75000. they aren't fun to fix with hydraulic lifters.


chains don't break like a belt will, but they do wear out. I think you'll be able to hear them if they get worn.
