Yes, I drew a line with the sharpie. After my first try I realized it was to hard to tell if it was spinning. I made the line and it turned out I was pushing down to much and it wasn't spinning. I have that all cleared up now.

Will faster spinning cut faster or should I try to keep it spinning at a "medium" speed.

not necessarily - you want consistent arm speed with pressure. Of course these are different when compounding vs polishing. You're on the right, best way I learned was to go out and just do it!

Impressive but man $$$

Definitely but if it's stronger then the rupes itll probably be the best all around polisher on the market. The throw of the rupes with more power would be amazing. It probably also has that lifetime warranty that griots usually has.

Yes indeed, especially if it's a lifetime warranty - hard to beat that!

I just bought a black 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland from my wife's company (owner of the company's former vehicle). The thing is in pretty good condition overall, with 93K miles, but has heavy surface scratches along the sides. So I decided this past weekend, now would be a good opportunity to have my first experience using a DA and compounds/polishes/sealants.

I used the following:

1st- Meguiar's Compound

2nd - Meguiar's polish

3rd - Griot's Garage Sealant

I know to a lot of you guys, it's not a very sexy line up, but I needed to do a quick job before taking the Jeep on a trip to DC over the holiday. No time to order stuff, so I got all these products from my local Vato Zone. Plus since this was my first time using a DA and doing a true multi step process, I also didn't want to spend a lot of money. I spent about $40 on all three products, and I have plenty of each left to do at least one other vehicle.

I am pretty happy with the results, although I think that next time, I will need to use a more aggressive compound on the surface scratches, as they are still quite visible in the right light/angle. I am thinking Meguire's M105 Ultra Cut Compound. Although I am a little nervous trying something so aggressive on a black vehicle, especially considering the fact that I am a n00b to proper detailing. But overall, the Jeep looks 100X better, and that job took about 70K miles off of the exterior.

And on top of it all, I think I may already be a little bit addicted to detailing. LOL I understand where a lot of you guys are coming from now!

And sorry, I didn't take any before/after pics. Posting fail on my part.

Awesome Chip! There's really only one way to learn - JUST DO IT!!! We all started somewhere, it's just a matter of what works best for you.

What kind of DA do you have?

Thanks James! Working on that Jeep, and taking it from what it was to what it is now, it was a very satisfying and rewarding process. Like I said, even kinda addicting!

Don't laugh too hard, but I picked up the Harbor Freight DA on sale with a coupon! LOL I think I paid like $40-50 for it. Honestly, I wanted to start out on the cheap to see if proper detailing was something I really wanted to spend time and money on. I am going to use the el cheapo HF DA for a while, and will likely step up to the tried and true Porter Cable 7424 XP, since that seems to be the workhorse DA among detailers.

I personally started with the PC by immediately got the Flex3401 - cost more but has more power. Personal preference really, I'd suggest the Griots Garage 6 instead of the PC - GG has a lifetime warranty. There are so many new DAs now its hard to keep up!

Wow, I didn't know the Griots had a lifetime warranty. Thanks for the heads up. I am sure when the time comes I will research what's available. And you are correct, there are several DAs from reputable manufacturers on the market today. Makes choosing one a tough decision! But I feel that way about all detailing products, really. It's total information over load for a newbie like myself! That's why I will probably stick to stuff that you guys on the forum use. And I will be spending more time lurking in the "Keeping it Clean" section. :High 5:
