There was some more visible progress today. The trenches for the retaining wall footings have been dug, and rebar was getting cut in preparation for the concrete. The concrete should get poured early next week, depending on when the permit gets issued. The back slope turned out to virtually solid rock, but they managed to chip away at it and get it dug.

Me too! It's been a long time coming!

I also just found out this afternoon that they will start trenching foundation footings for the houses in our phase of construction on November 17th.

Damn, Don. I was under the impression that rebuilding had started by now for all the fire victims... and your insurance company giving you the horns like that? Fuck man, what the hell is wrong with the world. I guess we just don't pay these fuckwad insurance companies enough, do we?

I really did think you guys had moved or at least began rebuilding by now, I had no idea it had taken so long. Really makes me appreciate what I have and that I wasn't hit. Although our home (we were living on Camp Pendleton at the time) was a refugee camp for two weeks (three families living with us in a 1200 sq ft apartment due to evacuations), we lucked out and didn't have the fires get close enough to us to do any damage.

So what are you guys doing right now, staying in a rental home? Hopefully insurance is at least covering that.

There are quite a few homes in our old neighborhood that under construction, and a handful that are complete. But there are also many vacant lots yet.

And yes, insurance has to pay for a rental house for us. By law, they have to do that for up to 24 months, so at least in that area we're good until next October. But, hopefully, we'll be moved before the 4th of July. :thumb:

On Monday, November 10, rebar started going into the retaining wall footings. This was as far as they could go until the wall permit and inspection was complete.

The county permitting process for the wall was delayed slightly because of the Veteran’s Day holiday. The permit was issued on Wednesday, November 12 and was recorded the following day. The inspection took place on Friday morning, so the concrete footings were poured about noon on Friday, November 14. A few hours later, the first course of block was going in.

Once the block layers got going, they really made quick work of the walls. About 24 hours later, on Saturday, November 15, they were nearly finished with the block work. Waterproofing, backfilling, and the drainage system are still to come.

Looks like that wall went up pretty quick. So your neighbor's house didn't burn down?
