Actually, yes - they have slip joint witha fixed flange instead of slipping on the shaft as the older transmissions did... the CV boot they put over this joint acts like a spring pulling the flange back on to the shaft... So, in a sense, yes, they are stretch/collapsible... The issue is whether you either: a. compress too far (bind) in one configuration OR b. stretch too far (leaving too little spline engaged) Frankly at 3/4" difference, it might not be either, so that would explain why it works, but best to double check...
