What about the title transfer? Wouldn't that work since it should be under his name, also get your bank to send you a copy of the payoff for the car when you sold it to him and the sc DMV should have the plates turned in from you or did you leave them on the car when you sold it?

if you have the bill of sale with a date and signature I dont see why the dmv wouldn't take you off the records.
