I have an 07 GT and I have the stock 17x8 rims with the stock Pirelli's. How wide of a tire can I go? How wide of a tire has anyone put on there? I was told that the widest I can go is 255/50/17. Does anyone know if this is true? Thanks in advance for the help.

Mike i believe you can run a 275/50/17 on all 4 corners on the stock rim without a problem. i currently run a 275/40/18 and they dont rub anything front or back

ive been running 275's for over a year front and back on 18x9.5" rims front and back

i believe you can squeeze a 275/50 on a 17" rim without a problem. it might bulge just a tad but nothing crazy

On my rear bogarts I run a 325-50-15 MT drag radial. They put 11inches of rubber on the pavement. All I did was relocate the swaybar with BMRs relocation brackets. That was only needed to fit the 15in rims on. It had nothing to do with the width of the tires. So you can go with a 11in tire or a true 10.5.

275 is way bigger than an "approved" size.... even on the 18x8.5 stock rims the 275 is a non approved size... as Ron said.... they may fit...but will bulge IMO.... on my 18s I went 255/45 front and 265/40 rear.....

They will bulge a little bit but will fit the 17" rim. I found someone who has them on his 05 but I think I might just go with a 255/50/17. Seems more reasonable. Thanks guys.

BTW if I get an H rated Tire which is rated at 130mph, what would happen if I went over 130? And no I don't do it often but it tends to happen sumtimes right Ron ;) lol

Remember about 8 years ago Firestone was all over the news because their SUV tires sucked and trucks were getting blow-outs from excessive heat and flipping?

Worse case, basicly that. Best case, nothing

Speed ratings are based on sustained speeds at average temps for the season class for a duration of 15 minutes. Quick bursts (a minute or less) should be fine.

an ex. would be,

Summer time, doing 100mph for an hour on the way to work on a 55 mph snow tire = :kill:

get a good tire mike. dont take chances. as for the 255 route i think its the best idea. now ig you want the wheels to appear larger, get a spacer like my friend dave has. they are cheap and will give the appearance of wider rims in the rear, while spacing them out as well. looks badass.

Winter time is not much better. 80mph for an hour going to work on a slightly warm day can get interesting on snows.

If you are talking about handling, a 235 is as wide as an 8" rim should have to minimize sidewall rollover. Just look at BMW and Porsche. They usually put 225-235 tires on a 8-8.5" wheel up front. And a 255 on a 9-9.5 in the back.

As far as normal driving, I would not go bigger than a 255 on an 8.

i have 255/50/17 on stock 17x8s, and while straight line traction improved... it feels a little 'wobbly'

235s are generally always perfect for a 8" but for daily driving on 255s, go for it... no regrets :D

A good compond tire gets you a hell of a lot more traction then just going with a wider tire, a 275/40 H rated tire say with treadwear of even 300AA, isnt going to stick anywhere as good as say even a 245/40 z rated tire with treadwear of around 140-200AA
