Just wondering, how much does inlet air temps affect the power cars make? Particularly the new 5.0. Anyone have any real knowledge on this? I was at the 1/8 mile track last night and before each run I'd have to sit in the staging lanes for several minutes and my IATs went up to 145-155 degrees. My best trap speed of the night was 88.68mph which seemed a little low to me considering I have a JLT intake and lund racing 92 octane tune (running 93 gas) and axle back exhaust. Granted the track does run about .75mph slower than most other tracks bc it's slightly uphill, but still just seemed a little low to me. And I'm a good driver. My 60' was a 1.93 and I stayed in 3rd through the traps.

When they reach a certain point your PCm will pull timing. . Resulting in a loss of power

Well yeah that's why I'm asking how much it actually affects it lol.

Damn that track pack gauge thing is awesome.

Yes it definitely is. I sat and watched after a run as the IATs would go from ~95 degrees on up to 145-150-155 lol.

more important IMO, what were the temps going down track once you were moving.

they only way to really answer your question would be to know how much/if any timing was being pulled as you made the run

But for reference, the factory tune (and our tune) has a constant slope on the timing retard for ACT from 100-150 ACT of about 1 degree retard per 10 degrees of ACT.

You did such a good job logging on the street, you should have logged your track runs. There's not better time to log than at the track!

Most likely once the car got moving the temps came right down. Your street logs show 69* at WOT.

I really think that if you taped that track pack thing out you would sleep better at night, lol.

Those are heatsoaked temps perfectly normal of open filter cais while stopped, once you get it moving this will come down really close to ambient.

Yes, I'm considering finding a way to disable it with our tune. :roflmao:

Absolutely, who knows if even Ford is regretting their decision on this.

To the OP, these comments and I think I can speak for Stkjock and Ken here, is not to bash your questioning and doubts as is good to ask them but sometimes as Stkjock said too much information without the knowledge to process it is counterproductive.

I still miss the days of having a pretty basic car with just an RPM, KPH and temp gauges to look at and spend the more time just having fun with it and less worrying about data.

By the time I hit the traps, the IATs dropped to about 100 degrees from 150.

How much power would you say is lost from going from 100* to 150* IAT and losing those 5* of timing?

I would have logged at the track but I didn't think about it. Plus logging with my laptop in the car like that might have been a little tough. It got thrown around pretty good in the car on the street doing the 3rd gear pulls lol. At this 1/8 mile track I have to hit the brakes pretty good at the end bc the slow down area is downhill... lol.

And yeah as the car is moving, the IATs are usually around ambient air temps. i was just saying sitting there with no air moving the temps go up a lot and never really realized that. There was one run where i ran back to back and on that run my IATs started at about 125* and I ran 1/2 mph faster than the other runs lol.

Absolutely, who knows if even Ford is regretting their decision on this.

Oh I understand completely. And you're right. I can guarantee a lot of people are going to become worried bc of info they see and stuff like that. I'm just trying to understand it all lol. Like when I posted about the AFR at WOT being 14.0 with the stock tune. But for this, I was just curious how much IATs actually affect power.

I strap the laptop with the seatbelt with it laid sideways in the passenger seat facing to me. Worth noting it is a netbook so it is small and light.

I'm seeing about 110F intake temps when it's like 75F outside. I think that's pretty good.

Why aren't you shutting down the engine while in the staging lanes?

I do, but it doesn't help a single bit. The air in the engine compartment gets pretty hot from the engine. Having it running or not doesn't change the fact no air is getting circulated under the hood.

Then open the hood.
