It depends on how they test but as long as you have cats and the emissions stuff you should pass visual and as long as your tuned right you should pass the computer tests and the smog test.

I've actually come across quite a few GTs lately with higher mileage going for pretty cheap especially if the price is negotiated with the seller a little. If you PM me a price cap of what you looking for that way when I see them I can send you the links as I come across them.

the V6 swap may be a lot of work, how much will you have to pay yourself for labor????

I would say if you have time there is most likely something that will match your car closer with a decent price, just a matter of having the money ready when the deal comes along,
