Anyone track or autox their mustang GT on OEM shocks / springs / swaybars?

In general how do you feel the balance of the car felt? Obviously there will be lots of body roll on the OEM springs/dampers/sway-bars, but other than that how is the balance? Understeer from corner entry to apex? Understeer in long sweepers? ….or balanced, can you transition from understeer to overseer with a slight lift? Could you put the power down after apex or did you have to be real careful to not spin the rears and induce oversteer?

I would love to hear your thoughts....

OEM suspension makes the car understeer EVERYWHERE like a Subaru, but that might just be my opinion.

I just did Sebring 2 weeks ago, my car has engine mods, but otherwise bone stock.
I ran it with BFG R1 Slicks. Now, keep in mind I just sold my 2000 GT with the entire Maximum Motorsports catalog in it. This was very different, a little "unsettled" but over all very stable.

The car ran great, it did everything it was supposed to. I did not drive it at 10/10ths of course. It did feel a little "Floaty" at speed, and I did lose the rear a few times, but at that time I was trying to push it.

As you know, its a MUCH better platform right out of the box from the old platform.

I did NOT have any understeer issues, but again I was running 275 35 18 slicks.

The only other mods I did in preparation for the weekend was Front brake cooling, Motul fluid, SS lines and Hawk DTC70 brake pads up front. Stock rears. The car also has 4.10's, 3.73's going in this week. 4.10 is a bit to much.

At 16 seconds in I did a 4-3 shift, instead of 5th. First time that ever happened, just not used the trans. I've only owned this car for a month or two. I got a little loose again at 1:30 in, decided to back off at that point.

I spent the last couple of years doing just that. Yes, it rolls like a ship in a storm. There is understeer pretty much everywhere--but that's typical OEM tuning on a street car. There is more power than grip in these cars, and you can get throttle oversteer easily. Overall, out of the factory the balance isn't horrible once you get used to the car, but there is tons of room for improvement.

I've run my Brembo car hard. It rolls and wiggles all over the place but it sure makes you feel like your going fast!

It understeers, but doesn't "plow" on the way in but you can turn it into slight oversteer mid corner with a little input and a lot of throttle. As long as you square the corners up they work pretty good.

My car was not a Brembo/track pack car. I had a lot of fun with the stock suspension and a decent set of tires for quite a while. As others have said, the key is to use throttle input to correct understeer.

You can read about Vorshlag taking their 600 mile 2013 to the track. It was as stock as we could stand, but not completely stock. It had 18x10 wheels and some 295/35/18 Nitto NT-05s. We did put an Eibach front bar and our camber plates on it. But the springs and dampers are stock and it has the stock GT non-Brembo brakes.

I was actually LOLing while working the Solo II last Sunday. I got to watch a couple of newbies in their completely stock Audis plow around the hairpin & sweeper I was stationed at. Those poor tires! Steering cranked full lock, tires howling for mercy, no direction change. FWD + whole engine hanging in front of the axle = no bueno.

I autocross my non-brembo car with just springs. And staggered widths. Just put the rear pressure up a little bit and it rotates nicely.

Ive autocrossed and tracked my 88 fox with cobra brakes and mm springs/konis and had sun. May need to get this car in a course before the summer ends.

I tracked my car last weekend on OEM springs / shocks + 275/35-18 tires on all 4 corners. My take was that it understeers on corner entry, and understeers rather bad in long sweepers (the carousel at summit point raceway). I could get the back end a little loose post apex with power in 2nd gear turns, but in 3rd gear turns it was a little harder. In general this is about what I was expecting from an OEM setup, but I wanted to get some input from you guys to see if you feel that same. Looks like most of us agree

Yeah, I usually grimace when people claim their bone stock S197 is perfectly balanced on the track. I guess it is if you aren't going fast - LOL. Once you start pushing the car it starts understeering badly. Camber plates are the first line of correction. They make much better use of the front tires, providing better performance and longevity.

Im gonna do an autocross this season. Been a couole if years. Never in an s197. Only my fox. Car is totallly stock down to tires. Should be awesome.

That looks familiar...

That was with the OEM suspension and summer tires. With Hoosiers, you could probably sweep the track under braking (well, until you cord the outside edges).

On the plus side, if you want to feel how weight transfers around a car, then an undersprung, underdamped, heavy Mustang is a good choice.
