2012 gt gear help

Hi guys just traded my 05 gt for a 2012 lava red gt. From what I've read most people are keeping their 3.31s? No boost planned as of right now. I'm looking to get rid of LSD. Is all that's needed is the traction lok kit? Or should i switch gears to another FRPP 3.31 or 3.73s while I'm there? Car has 47k on it.. thanks!

Auto or manual?

I have 3.73's (factory) and it's all I know, lol. Lots of shifting but I don't spend a lot of time in rush hour/stop-and-go traffic. I don't go to the track (wuss!) but the drag guys say that 3.73's are too steep and you will need to shift into 5th at the end of the quarter-mile (not good). If you have an automatic, then 3.31's are the same as 3.73's in a manual car and are OK for the strip.

That's all I can offer. A search will turn up lots of meaty threads using 'auto+gears' and you'll get much more useful info than provided by me.

6M and Lava Red = a nearly perfect Mustang, imho.

Going back to my mustang brochure, I found out that 3.31s are stock, 3.55s are optional, and 3.73s are optional.

I would say that 3.73s would not be ideal for the dragstrip. 1st is finished very quickly and wheelspin may be a problem so your 60 ft time would not be stellar. OTOH, if you install a big intake (CobraJet or Boss or GT350) then you can stay in 4th at the end of the quarter. In contrast to teh strip, 3.73s would seem (to me) to be a good choice for auto-x or track events. I like 'em but I just toodle around town in nice weather. 3.73s can whine, too, if they are not set up exactly just right. For a stock manifold (most people, I think), a set of 3.55s would be a decent upgrade at the strip.

That's it, gtkid, I've got nothin' left in my head about gears.

Kinda confused here. You want to get rid of the LSD? So why get a rebuild kit? I'm assuming that's what you mean by traction lok kit.

With regard to 11+ Mustang GT manual cars, a group of us with Coyote's some years back made a showing at the local track. all of us but one were manual and we were all stock at that time. Don't know the gear on the auto and of course it was the fastest running 12.6x as I recall.

The manuals were 3 373 geared cars, 1 355 geared car, and 1 331 geared car. The 331 geared car made the quickest pass running 12.85 best on a stock setup and street tires on 1.97 60ft. that was backed up with 2 12.9x passes and the slowest being a 13.07. Of course that was my then stock 2013 GT premium GHIG. One other car that day broke into the 12's and that was the 355 car.

Some of that may have to do with driver but the results were still actual live data with no fluff. I expected to be the back of the pack, but the contrary proved out. My friend Josh with the 3.55 and I left with a feeling of humble satisfaction. LOL!

For reference the getrag Mt-82 is a much shorter geared transmission than the 3650 and other tremecs. so it does not need the gear that they do to be at teh same ratio. It's fifth gear is teh 1:1 ratio unlike Tremecs T56, 3650, and 6060 all which use 4th as 1:1 and have two OD's.

I would not gear in lower than the 355 personally on your setup. For reference
MT82 ratios are

1st 3.66, 2nd 2.43, 3rd 1.69, 4th 1.32, 5th 1.00, 6th 0.65

You're right about the gearing of the MT-82, too -- the 3.73's makes the driver busy when driving stoplight to stoplight, lol.
