Fuel or Fire? help!

05, hardly no mods to speak of,47,000 miles. I first noticed it was wanting to hesitate to crank after a drive when it was hot, like it did'nt want to pick up the fuel,and when it does finally crank, I do smell gas really bad. and while cruising the other day, it just started to idle rough and wanted to quit, anyone ever experience this? I had the fuel pump fixed under warrenty,and just had the fuel filter changed,I have not ran any codes yet, because my engine light always stays on , because of no cats, so any help would be great.Thanks.

check the spark plugs? And also if the car is tuned without cats it shouldnt have a check engine light. I had fumes coming in side of my car, due to a gas leak just got it fixed today and no more smell.

^^No tune just, catless H pipe. Glad you found the fix!

Might need a tune if you cut the cats off. Might be the problem.

Probably a good idea, the 02s are probably reading like there suppose to be cats there, when I took my cats off went with high flow, I didn't think I needed a re tune but I did

Check to see if you have a leaky injector. The smell of fuel is probably from flooding it after trying to start it repeatedly.

^^^I looked to see if there may be something abnormal under hood, but nothing. Could it be a coil pack not firing??

If you don't have a tune..and you have a catless H pipe the PCM thinks you have cats and is trying to cool them by dumping gas... you need a tune! Probably new plugs too after 47,000 miles as well.

*UPDATE* Ok today i stopped at the gas station to fill up and left the car running, while i was taking the gas cap off the car it tried to die and started to puff out black smoke!I quickly put it back on and it picked back up. Turned it off to fill up and after i payed it would spin forever before it would run again, I thought i was S.O.L.! What is going with this car?? I have done this fill up procedure a thousand times, never had this happen until now! Anyone have any idea what may be wrong? I had the codes checked and only thing came up was exhaust, because of having no cats, of course..

I am running a catless X w/no tune and I get this symptom also. However I do not have a CEL. My only problem is a rough idle and the car wont start when really cold out (thankfully im in Cali). Also Lucky Flying Roush is correct below...

Welcome. Have you also done the o2 non fouler thing? It might help a bit.

Have not been driving the car too much, cranked it and it was running fine until i stopped to get gas , left it running to see if it would stay cranked and started to puff black smoke and died! Turned off the ignition fueled it and barely cranked off. Why does this happen when i take off the gas cap?

FYI you should never fill your car up while it is running. Screws up the evap system on the car and you will get a check engine light. I'd say you have a leak in the evap system somewhere from what you are describing.

^^^The main reason i did was just to see if it would die when i took the gas cap off while it was running, and it dies every time i take the gas cap off, sucks air in really strong , and then it will not take fuel.
