First check voltage with the car running, might be getting too much voltage (the regulator in the Alternator might be bad). Next is there a massive amount of corrosion in or on the positive cable? if to the resistance might be to high in the cable.

Yes they dont like them they told me they have better luck with the Ford 59# units that being said I told them lets work with what you know works. If you decide to in get that Edelbrock kit - I think you will be happy it was a nice straight forward install and wonderfully planned out kit.
