Does anyone know if this 2011+ Firewall insulator pad can be retrofitted to earlier S197's with ease?

I've always noticed that the 05-10 S197's have a lot more noise coming from the engine compartment compared to 2011's up... and I'm curious to know if this insulator pad may be the fix that Ford sought out to as far as reducing interior noise. I'm pulling the engine on the Bullitt again and figured I would install it if there is a chance it could decrease the noise, since I'm working on refining everything.

I'm doing a layer of dynamat behind the dash as well, but figuring that if I could hook this up on the firewall, it should be easy. Is there any differences in firewalls on the S197's from 05-09 and 10-14?

Item I'm talking about is #10 in this picture

Heh, kind of ironic. I drove a 5.0 when they came out and it was so boring, this is probably one of the reasons why. My 4.6 was stock at the time!! Just 3.73's the Bullitt came with. Yeah, the little hashed lines on the speedo might have gone by faster...

Yeah. I know it won't be for everyone, but I'm tired of the loud engine bay NVH from accelerating, and want to see how I can tone it down.

Looks like this is doable, just will have to figure out the mounting holes since the 05-09 don't have that revision in the firewall.

I would say it is doable since they are almost the same but the way it mounts is odd. They have the bolts sticking through the firewall and I'm not sure how they are mounted. I have thought about removing mine but then I wasn't sure what to do with the bolts or what you did with them.

Here is a 2013 without the mat for reference. They look pretty much identical.

Is that basically MLV?
No its ensolite (think neoprene) its a dense closed cell foam under 1/4 inch thick.
I used it before on a sound quality geared car audio install
It works best against higher frequencies and would actually probably work quite well for what your looking too do. My worry would be durability and how it deals with heat as I have only used it on the interior of a vehicle.

That will quite literally do nothing for blocking sound.

Nope, ensolite foam.

It won't make a difference at all used by itself. Being into SQ car audio myself, I've used it before. We use this foam as a decoupler. Standard sound deadening would be CLD(your dynamat or other companies butyl and aluminum sheets), then ensolite, then MLV. I would think this could work for you also but would be worried about heat. Maybe a thermal layer on top of the MLV?

But FYI more road noise will be coming through the floor than through the firewall. I know adding weight isn't the goal but I would do it all haha.

The best way to block sound is with mass. To block sound using foam it would end up being thicker than your car is wide.

Your off with this, it does actually help with high frequency, mass is best for lower, you have to look at sound as what it is, wave energy, short waves do not penetrate as well as longer ones so all frequencies need to be addressed differently.

Ok. If you really want to do it right then use these products.

Yes, I know that. 1/8" or 1/4" foam will not reduce the sound as much as you are thinking.

Look at the posts by Rudeboy. He is the owner of Sound Deadener Showdown, which is one of the best places to buy products from. Closed cell foam is about decoupling. While it might absorb some frequencies, they will be out of audible range.

If you really want to get into it like some, use a calibrated microphone and measure the noise from inside the cabin. Look at it and determine what frequencies you need to cut out and deaden accordingly. Then measure again.

Luxury Liner Pro is some great stuff, although expensive if you are using a lot of it.

This site is a great one not only for products(price, quality) but also for information on sound deadening.

Does anyone have any photos of a 11-14 firewall up close, preferably without the blanket or engine installed? Trying to figure something out and it's not the easiest thing to find pictures of.

I doubt it will help, but if you need close up with the blanket I can get you a picture of anything you need.
