Just got a '14 GT w/ MT-82 and 3.73

220 miles on the Odo

Most of the time, I cant find 3rd gear, and it feels like there is something blocking me from entering 3rd gear. No grinding. If I shift above 3,500rpm, I can go into all 6 gears

So I'm ending up going from 1st to 2nd, to 5th when cruising around.

What is this and is it common??

Is this your first manual?

It sounds to me that you just aren't used to this transmission and are not getting into the shift gates. Let the shifter guide itself, trust me, it can find the gears by itself. All you need to do is apply pressure to engage the gear.

take it back to ford

Didn't know they had eliminated that. Glad to see they got rid of that stupidity

Driver mod is needed! Yes, first manual. Go easy on me fellas :)

I figured LOL

No, but seriously, the MT-82 is a great transmission despite what you will read all over the internet. I've driven plenty of MT equiped cars. THIS transmission doesn't coopereate with being forced into the shift gate. It simply guides itself.

What I suggest is you go out to your car, and just go through each gear, with it off of course, and get a feel for the shift gates. You simply just need to push a little left for 1st and 2nd, let it put itself in the middle for 3rd and 4th, and slightly push right for 5th and 6th. Don't try to force it, it's pretty good at finding the gears itself. Hope this helps.

Yea it's definitely not like a tremec. Took some getting used to after driving my 05 and fox bodies for years.

+1 best way to shift 2-3 quickly is just push straight up with maybe a hint of rightward pressure. You don't need to man-handle the shifter at all. I can bang my car through the gears with the stock shifter without issue now that I have learned that. I used to smash into the gate between 3 and 5 before when I tried to shift the car like my WRX or my STI.

I did the same thing when I first got my car a couple weeks ago. I was always hitting the gate between 3 and 5 but I finally got used to it. Definitely a different feel from the t5 and 3550.

Thanks all for the replies.

since I'm new, I'll ask...

Is the little bit of "clunk" I'm feeling and hearing pretty normal when shifting in the lower gears (1-2-3)? 4,5,6 are really smooth, almost like an auto.

Is it the 2pc driveshaft?

If I were worried about the shift behavior of my new car, I'd go to a dealer and ask to test-drive another, similar car. If the same moves on your part result in different reactions between cars, there might be some reason to get the service folks involved. Otherwise, it may just b a matter of gaining experience and familiarity.

My '13 manual transmission is a bit reluctant to go into second and third without making a little crunch, unless I hesitate with the lever in the neutral position. It also refuses to come out of second and go anywhere at or near red line, a known problem with many.

Great advice! Let the shifter pop up out of second into the neutral gate and push firmly but gently forward up into 3rd. Practice in the driveway with engine idling and clutch fully depressed; 2-N-3, 2-N-3, 2-N-3. You will get the feel and it will become muscle memory. If it still gives you trouble after practicing then there might be a clutch release or trans problem. If not, slowly work your way up to shifting faster, but still don't over muscle it.

Definitley a different feel with this shifter/trans setup then any other mustang(older) I have driven. Took me a while during my 800 mile trip home with the car to get use to 2-3 shift and to stop cringing everytime I went for the 5-6 shift. This is my first 6-spd and with the old T-5 stuck in my brain I was nervous every 5-6 shift as if I was going into reverse at 80mph!

Definitely a smooth setup though. As mentioned before once you get use to letting the shifter do the work and not just try to slam it into the gears it flows well and easy to bang gears.

So, I'm up to about 300 miles on the clock-- and I'm hitting 2-3 every time now perfectly.

You guys are so right. This thing wants to do all the work for you- you just have to gently point it where to go.

Before, I was trying to go at it a little too forcefully. Sitting in the car with the engine off and going through the gears helps a ton.

Now.... you guys that shift ridiculously fast.. my hat is off to you. I'm new to the manual game and I never realized how much skill is involved

The more you drive it the easier it will come to you. I have been driving manual cars since I was 17. Its too much fun to stay away for long!

Definitely let this trans/shifter combo do the work! The more you force it to more grinding and mis shifts you will have.
