4.0 serpentine squeal - harmonic balencer?

Hi-

I've been trying to get my 4.0L Mustang's serpentine to stop squealing.
After replacing the belt, the torsion pulley, and the idler pulley, I think I narrowed it down to the side of the belt rubbing on the inside the crank pully.

How might this get out of alignment? The rubber on the pulley looks a little worn.

Thanks,
Kenny

The old belt didn't seem to be worn, although it hasn't been doing it long.
Can the crank pulley be adjusted? Is it possible that it may have moved forward?
Can I move it with a BFH?

Make sure there is no rubber residue on any of the flat idler pulleys that the back of the belt comes in contact with. If you see any, carefully run a flat head screwdriver on it while the engine is running like a needle on a record player until it is all off.

When you replaced the belt, did you get the one with the updated part number mentioned in the TSB?

If you did and that didn't fix the squealing, check to see if any of the accessories have excessive drag, causing the belt to slip. A/C compressors can do that just before they fail.

The crank pulley is an integral part of the harmonic balancer on these engines. If the rubber behind the pulley looks worn or cracked, you should consider replacing the harmonic balancer as the rubber part likely isn't doing it's job any more, however I've not heard of this causing a belt misalignment where one didn't exist before. If you can see a noticeable misalignment with the belt in this area, you might want to try replacing the mounting bracket mentioned in the TSB posted above.

I suspect the harmonic balencer is the culprit. The rubber on the pulley looks really bad. All other pulleys rotate smoothly. Taking it to a friend who manages a Tires Plus. Needs lower ball joints too.

Thanks Guys,

yep, those were the signs of the pulley coming apart which is pretty common with the 4.0`s. the rubber ring will look tattered, you will get some belt squeel first at start up, changing to more often till when it comes apart completely. you can also see while its running that its out of align just a little (at that point, its coming apart fast)
