Good morning my fellow Mustang owners, I have been doing the 6R80 swaps for years now inn quite a few different platforms but above all my favorite has to be the 2005-2010 Mustang. The 6R80 keeps the 3V mod motor in its powerband better than the 5R55 and is a all around better option for street / race cars. When it comes to the 6R transmission there have been quite a few control options you have the Quick 6 from US SHIFTS as a stand alone option, you have late model 2005-2011 Ford controllers, or the best of the bunch the 2011-2014 Ford controller with 2015-2017 being another option but takes a little more know how to achieve. Each one of the controllers has it strong points and each has its downfalls with your average DIY guy. When it comes to wiring I have been doing factory system integrations on ford for going on 20 years man I'm getting old. The 6R80 is the cream of the crop when it comes to ford transmissions in stock form from the last 15 years it has a lot of capacity stock but can be upgraded to handle some pretty big HP/TQ numbers. When paired with a proper engine/transmission calibration the vehicle can perform more consistent and not have the shortcomings the 5R55S developed early on.
I have a 2008 Ford Expedition 5.4 3V FI that has been upgraded from a 6R75 to a 6R80 ad is controlled by a 2014 Ford 5.0 strategy similar to what the 4V 4.6 guys do. I was surprised to see there wasn't or hasn't been a control pack offered for the 2005-2010 Mustang GT guys. So I went a head and built one for my Expedition 3V and it has been flawless for the 7 years. My next project is my 2013 S197 premium which I will be using another 5.4L 3V built FI motor paired with a Tremec TR9070 DCT transmission. The Tremec I would like to use due to the fact no one has made a swap kit for the 1999-2004 GT, 2005-2010 GT, and 2008-2014 GT500 Mustang guys. This swap should be finished in the next few months machine shop is nearly finished with the motor. The only other Tuner I know of that has done a similar swap is in the 2018-2023 Mustang GT annd he has it 99% functional. This will be a fun project similar to a BMW M57 / 6R80 swap I tunned last year using a factory 2011 -17 ecoboost controller for the 6R80. If anyone is doing their own 6R swap im happy to assist in making your swap the best it can be and providing you some info along the way free of charge.
On a side note I like the Quick 6 and have used it many times on different builds for customers as well as my own truck prior to going to all factory controllers only. My truck is actually on their page the Earth Pearl Expedition which has been going strong since 2013 with no problems updated to the 6R non mechatronics back in late 2017. My only issue with the Quick 6 is its kind of a drag (but it can be daily capable) vs the preciseness and control of a factory PCM.
