Well for one the diff cover normally says on it; unless the stickers been removed. Then you can just look at the actual size of the assembly.

Aren't the covers between the two slightly different?

How can you tell a 7.5 or a 8.8 without the sticker?

Scroll down nearly all the way down and you can see the difference between the two covers if you don't have an id tag. Easiest way is to look at the pictures and compare to yours.
